I had another pic but cant find it on my phone. But the hunter called the MDC and the conservation officer determined that it was not an elk or a whitetail. MDC did not make him use his deer tag on it.They took blood samples and sent them off.Thats all I know

It looks VERY simliar to a type of deer we have free ranging on the eastern shore of Maryland. They are called Sika Deer.

You Beast guys would be HOOKED! There is thousands upons thousands of public land that these deer live in. Its NASTY 'woods', being mostly marsh and pine stands with water.... hip boots are a MUST!!

Here is an outfitter which has some good info on our 'little elk'.

http://sikastag.com/

They bugle just like elk, make wallows and all... there 'rut' is in October, and Ill never miss it. We do some deer drives late in the season and usually do well.... its more like rabbit hunting as the bucks, or 'stags' and does or 'hines' dont run like a whitetail, you basically have to kick brush and briars, climb on you hands and knees, and of course it will be wet.... everything about them is completely different than a whitetail.

everyone who has been, always comes back. Its about 2.5 hrs from my area but we make regular trips.

A true giant is an 80 lb 6 point. Ive 'heard of' 8's, but they dont get that big. A 4 pointer NEEDS to be mounted.... they are so hard to hunt and to kill.

The guy that shot was from St. Louis and new to deer hunting"His first deer". That would be a heck of an experience for a first deer.

Yeah, I'd agree that's a Sitka deer.

I think you meant Sika as a Sitka is a blacktail.

Yes, that's what I meant to type. Buddies in Maryland shoot these things all the time.

I'm going to say a young red stag.

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
