Sledding your deer out of a swamp
As I scout more swamps on public land, I see the need for a sled in addition to my deer cart. I would think a narrow sled would be best to pull between obstacles, but those narrow sled riding sleds seem brittle and would break easily. Ice fishing sleds are heavier but also wider. I'm looking for something that is both durable and easy to maneuver. Obviously they were not made for pulling a 200 lb deer though swamp terrain. I have never sledded one out yet, but hopefully that changes soon! Any suggestions on sleds from those of you who have done it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I use this sled.

Haven't used this one but looks like it would work well with a few modifications.

Do you like your cabelas sled Dewey? Obviously you use it so probably don't hate it but is there any things you don't like about it?

Thanks! I didn't even know they made such a thing. It must be a midwest thing, I've never seen one in Pennsylvania.

Dewey that's a nice sled. Honestly I've never used one. I think I will keep this one in mind for this year.

Re: Sledding your deer out of a swamp
With some of the areas I'm scouting this year, I will definitely need to add a sled to my gear!
That Home Depot one looks like a good start.

It works well but the ratchet straps are really cheap so need to be replaced with better ones or just lacing up with paracord would probably work even better.
I also modified the pull rope by extending it and feeding it thru a 1" pvc or plastic tube as wide as the sled. This works well for a handle with two people pulling side by side to spread the load and eliminate rope pinch on the hands.

i drilled holes in the edges, so that if i need to i can use bungi cords to keep the deer in or hold legs down.

Its hard to find good heavy plastic ones any more. The cheap ones break.

I've got an older version of deweys. I think I used it once way back. Should have used it more. It rolls up nice and bungles my stand. About 2lbs. Take it off at base of tree.

Re: Sledding your deer out of a swamp
i used a cheap kids sled and it was helpful but it was very frustrating too. Two reasons, it was too short so the buck was hanging off catching on things and it was a flat sled so it kept tipping on its side, see pics below. I would say whatever you get, make sure it is long enough and has some sides so it doesnt flip as easy. That one dewey posted looks perfect because 1. it is plenty long enough and 2. it can't flip on its side like a flat bottom sled.
flipping on its side in tall grass:
Too short, buck hanging off the front catching on everything:

Cool stuff. I was gifted that home depot one for christmas last yr. Have not tried it yet... But I REALLY like the looks of that cabelas one you posted. And I am betting you could make one very similar to it home-made on the cheap. Got my brain gears turning there Dewey.

Dicks sporting goods has a pretty nice sled. I looked at it in the store and it was pretty solid thick plastic.
