Hi everyone,
It's my first post and my first time hunting with a treestand. I've always still hunted in the coastal California hills, did a lot of hiking last season and saw zero blacktails with a rifle. This season I decided on trying out a treestand and bow for the July archery opener.
Trying to pin dow treestand placement location should I be looking for oak trees or oat fields that time of year?
Hardly any California hunters use treestands, any of you guys use them out in the oak hills?

Welcome Calibowman,
I don't have a clue, just wanted to say welcome to the BEAST. Only been to California once and was along the coast in northern california. Beautiful part of the country. Where you at?

Never hunted blacktails. But I would think the hill country whitetail tactics would be a good place to start. Then refine them to fit your needs out there. Go to the All Time Best Tactical Threads section under the deer hunting forum. Look for the hill country related threads.
And keep us posted on how it's going. I am personally very interested!!!!

If you do a lot of hiking, you might like a tree saddle. Much lighter than a treestand if you are moving around and covering a lot of ground

Re: Questions about tree stands for CA blacktails
Thanks for such a warm welcome. I usually hunt the A zone but sometimes venture up to the B zones too, however i rarely have enough time to get that far away. I've found a nice little area a few hours from the the Bay where I can find rabbits pretty much every time I get out there with only a few hours of time.
I've been seeing a 4x4 and a 3x3 during the rut and have found the sheds from likely the same 4x4. So now I know where he wintered, just trying to find out where he'll be on the morning of July 8th 2017. I already broke down and purchased a stand. I'll keep up the scouting and let you guys know how i do in July.
All the blacktails I've taken have had bellies full of acorns, they've all been taken in September though.

What kind of stand did you get?
Make sure you practice ahead of time with it as well

Re: Questions about tree stands for CA blacktails
I've heard nothing but good things about hawk stuff. Just get out and practice. Using a hang on stand isn't as simple as it seems the first time.
But lots of good mods on how to silence the set up, make it easy to carry, and just about anything you can think of

Welcome to the Beast!
I've never hunted blacktails being an East coast guy but I'd key in on the oat field until the acorns drop. Sounds like you're on the right track, hang some trail cameras if you can and go from there.
Good luck with it and keep us updated

Welcome!!! I've got no advice about blacktails, but I'm pulling for ya! Too cool to be hunting a few days after the Fourth of July! What you are doing is fairly original from what I've seen on this site. That being said, good luck, And KEEP US UPDATED !!! I would love to see any pics as well.
Be original and Enjoy every step along the adventure.

Call up the CA DFW and ask for their deer biologist. They'll be able to help you better than us. We're mostly a Midwest whitetail crowd.
