Re: strange wounds deer survived
A 2.5 yr old buck my brother and I shot. His body was very skinny and undersized. When we field dressed him, his lungs were fused to the inside of his rib cage. I have no idea if it was from a wound or what. Just thought that was strange.

Re: strange wounds deer survived
Two archery seasons ago, my dad shot a buck quartering away and ended up running the angle a little shallow. It entered right at the crease at the back of the right shoulder, about center vertically, and exited in front of the opposite shoulder. He tracked it down about a mile before blood disappeared.
Two months later, the same buck comes in during gun season. He decided to take it again, assuming it would have to have an infection somewhere. When dressing him out, the right lung had healed from a fairly solid single lung shot. There was no infection, and most of the entry and exit wounds was already healed up and scarred over. I would have never thought a deer would make it with a hit lung.

Wow, unreal. I didn't think something like that was biologically possible.

Re: strange wounds deer survived
A fellow who hunts the same property that I do told me that he shot a big buck. He was slug gun hunting and a few guys were doing a push. He shot the buck facing away from him and swore he shot its tail off. He was sure it was a fatal shot but did not find the buck.
I thought the story was a little to good to be true.
Fast forward a year and I killed a big buck with only half a tail and a fist sized area of scar tissue at the top of the ham beside the spine.
As it turned out I should have believed it.

Re: strange wounds deer survived
So my buddy shows me a few pictures of two bucks that were killed in the same area a few days apart. One buck was his buck that had a nice rack and appeared to me to be a 3.5 year old. His buck had a very skinny body like the buck had gotten sick or looked malnourished. The other buck was killed by his friend at the same camp. His buddies buck was also nice but had a broken up rack. This other buck was missing about 8-9 inches off of his g2.
Both bucks were brought to the same taxidermist. When the taxidermist was capping them out. A broken tine was found lodged in the skinny bucks throat. The last pic he showed me was taken by the taxidermist, it showed the lodged antler. The taxidermist was able to take the broken antler and glue it back on the buck with the missing g2.
I'm not sure if the skinny buck would have lived. I have a lot of respect for whitetails and their desire to live.

A doe that was shot as a fawn in the head mouth area by a rifle bullet. Saw her on camera for 3 years she healed from it. I remember after it happened she lost most of her body weight and had a real hard time eating. Amazingly she survived quite a few more years.
