Hello, new to the forum
Hello,
My name is Mike,I have been lurking for sometime on the site and decided to join. I have a question about hunting the thermal tunnel. Where would the tunnel be located if you have a predominately west wind and the ridge that you want to hunt runs west to east? Would you still hunt the top third of the ridge or would you avoid the ridge until you had a different wind? Thanks in advance!
Mike

Welcome to the beast!
As far as your question, the thermal tunnel is on the leeward (downwind side) of the ridge. For a east west ridge, you would want anything that isn't straight east or west wind. Northerly wind, you will have thermal tunnel on the south side, and south wind you would have a thermal tunnel on the north side. As far as avoiding the ridge on a not favorable wind, it all depends on other options. I don't pass up options to hunt but since I hunt public I have endless areas to go if I don't like the wind for a particular spot.
This thread should answer a lot of your questions

Welcome to the Beast.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Welcome to the BEAST
Jonny is right about the East/West ridge with a West wind. I'm not a hill guy but I know from seeing mule deer tendencies out West that whitetails will be similar. Out there, if I have a East/West ridge and west wind, I'm going to be watching for a small finger/point shooting off the North or South side. I think the correct term might be "spur". Then you will have the leeward situation you are looking for, even though the terrain feature might be very small compared to the rest of the ridge.
