Anyone have a visual example of a saddle ? Are they located on the tops or sides of ridges

Use the search button after typing in "topo saddle" and you will see links to a number of posts and maps with saddles. 8-)

A saddle is the low point between two peaks of a hill. Here is a picture I took of Deadhorse Saddle as I traversed it in Death Valley. You can see there are two higher peaks, and I am making my way towards the low point in the middle.

Good pics above, which should be helpful. Notice the little drainage creeks off of the side of the hill on the topo above often originate from a saddle. If you are scouting without a topo map that can be helpful to keep in mind.

If walking on a ridge (or better yet off to the side of a ridge) I pay attention when the ground gets softer or muddy. Often this will be a sign of a small saddle not visible on most topographic maps. The big obvious ones often have hunters on public. Small ones are sometimes overlooked.

All replies have helped a lot, thanks. The best place for a stand on these would be on the side of the high point or in the saddle itself?
