Hunting quotes that click for you

Unread postby xpauliber » Thu Jan 05, 2017 6:19 am

You know how sometimes you can read or hear something but it doesn't click for you and then you hear the same thing presented in a different way and all of the sudden it makes sense? There's a few quotes that I've heard Dan and other people say that really made a topic click for me. Below are some of my favorite paraphrased quotes or terms that I am constantly reminded of when I'm out in the woods.

-Dan Infalt on the importance of being able to get in THE tree he needs to be in (courtesy of a Lone Wolf & sticks): "We're not hunting trees, we're hunting bucks." This quote made me think about some of the areas I hunted in the past where I found THE tree I wanted to be in but my climber wouldn't fit so I picked a tree that would work but it put me out of the game. I got a Lone Wolf & sticks shortly after and behind my bow, it's my 2nd best piece of equipment I've ever purchased.

-Andrae D'acquisto was talking about the importance of first time sits and not tipping the buck off to the fact that you were in his area and he used the term "Virgin sets". You could also call it "mobile hunting" and since I've started to do this, my success had greatly increased.

-This is probably my most favorite quote from Dan talking about the importance of scouting more than you hunt and then only setting up on FRESH sign:
"I'm not concerned with what the deer were doing yesterday...I'm not too concerned with what they're going to be doing tomorrow...I want to know what they're doing NOW, because NOW is when I want to kill them." I love it.

Feel free to add some quotes that have helped you and why.

This is a quote from one of Gene Wensels books that has always stuck with me, I may have even plagiarized it a time or two  "The best deer attractant in the world is human absence."

If you hunt like other hunters, you won't shoot the deer they don't see.

"We're not hunting deer ... we're hunting mature bucks."

A very good quote on this forum to live by if you want to only hunt mature bucks. You've got to get in that mindset that mature bucks dont hang out in the same places as 98% of other deer.

“A peculiar virtue in wildlife ethics is that the hunter ordinarily has no gallery to applaud or disapprove of his conduct. Whatever his acts, they are dictated by his own conscience, rather than by a mob of onlookers. It is difficult to exaggerate the importance of this fact.” -Aldo Leopold

You can't kill what's not there ~ The Big Buck Serial Killer

Cam Hanes talks about trying to be as tough as the animals he chases. So didn't this guy,

By the time hunting season comes along they are well fleshed out. They have stored up a bit of lard for the winter. They are in peak condition; the best condition they are going to be in all year. And if the bucks are in rut, they are feeling higher than in super shape. They're randy, rambunctious, strong, and just full of p.ss and vinegar.
And what about you? Had a nice summer? Drank a lot of beer? Sat around on weekends, sunning yourself or playing an easy round of golf while the deer were cavorting on the hillside?
Mister, if you aren't in shape to dog a mountain buck and follow him for 15 mile, then walk out of the woods and be ready to do it again the next day, and maybe the day after, and maybe for a week, then just be an armchair buck hunter.

^i love that mentality

Not specifically hunting related but definitely applies:

I don't remember who or when I first heard this but it's been repeated by quite a few people.

"You can't kill (insert what the animal your hunting is) from the couch."
