Back in the day when I worked 12 hr days on third shift I would be to tired to sit in my treestand. I had a pretty cool routine I learned hunting the public. While glassing in the summer I patterened deer movement under low pressure circumstances. I learned that during the weekdays nobody else was hunting mornings. I would wait till the crack of light n stalk all the open fields. The deer would still be feeding and with the ground wet from morning dew and using the lay of the land I could stalk the deer down for a shot with my bow. On top of that I could hit every crop field pretty quick by glassing certain vantage points and moving on if the field was empty. I killed 2 bucks n a handful of does doing this. It was live action n kept me awake. Anyone else love a good spot n stalk? Has anyone killed a mature buck like this? Both of mine were 1.5 yr olds. I did have a few hunts where I seen 2.5 to 3.5 yr old bucks but never got a shot off.

Spot and stalk hunting is a blast! I've had quite a few successful stalks but never on a mature buck. Got within 30 yards of a 2.5 year old and thought he was closer. Shot right under him.

I've done it a handful of times with a gun. Probably only one four-year-old if I had to guess. Still haven't stalked one with a bow yet. Really want to.

Re: Spot n stalk bucks.
I have killed a couple big bucks doing spot and stalk late season all in the snow I think. Another one I distinctly remember I grazed the back of, misjudged the range in pre-rangefinder days. That one I remember more than any of the successful hunts, he was a mature 6 point over 130 gross, would have been an awesome looking trophy...had him dead to rights thought he was almost 200 yards but was actually less than 150 Lesson learned shooting across valleys is tough without a rangefinder.
I like to work through where I know the bedding is in hill country, slip up to the top of the opposite ridge and glass across, if there's nothing I move to the next spot. I like to do this when its windy or snowy that helps be able to get within 200 yards with my muzzle loader. Haven't ever don't it with a bow, that's another level of difficulty all together!

Re: Spot n stalk bucks.
My last 2 bucks from this year were killed from the ground but only 1 was an actual spot and stalk.. and both were with rifle. I have fallen in love with it.. i wont be dpjng many attempts at stalking with my bow but i will be doing alot of ground hunting when im hunting my beds. Around here its more pines than anything else and they are loud to get up.. Plus walking around down here is loud as heck but as long as your never seen i think you can slip in close and it not bother him if you can sound like a deer or other critter so im gonna be experimenting with it alot in the future
IF YOU EVER HAVE A DAY IN THE WOODS WHERE YOU DONT LEARN SOMETHING, THEN YOU DIDNT PAY CLOSE ENOUGH ATTENTION
