Big buck lost his horns after the shot

Unread postby Beauford » Sat Jan 01, 2011 5:36 am

My friend just shot a buck a couple of days ago that lost both sides after the shot. It was a 5 1/2 year old ten point. When he recovered it half the side was missing, and when taking pictures the other half fell off. I took a picture of the one side with my phone it is huge, sorry not sure how to post with phone pictures. He is going back out today to look for the other side he believes it fell off at the shot it went down and then got back up. (hunting area up by the Dells)

Unfortunately this time of the year this is pretty common. Hope your friend finds the other antler.
The thing I really hate to see is when somebody shoots what they think is a huge doe and ends up being a mature buck that shed both antlers! :o

hopefully he finds the other side...a big mature buck like that would be a shame to shoot only being able to have one side to it

Hope he finds the other side. Sounds like he shot it in the nick of time.

If he cant find it make sure he marks the deers trail with surveyers tape. He can track the antler down in the spring.

Did this two seasons ago on the"one-horner" I shot. Had to wait until spring to find the one he shed/lost on his death run.

Felt pretty embarrased not being able to find it the next day in the snow and waiting until snow melt.

A few years back I was hunting a 9 year old buck that was a legond in Rome Marsh. A neighbor ended up jumping him and shooting him. He emptied his gun at it and put one or two rounds from his 12 gauge thru the antlers the busted rack scored 197 but would of scored 217ish if he didn't blow the antlers apart. He actually went out in the cattails and searched until he found every sizable antler piece and had it repaired.
