I'm a big buck hunter. Occasionally a big buck killer. I'm trying to close that gap. I pass tons of bucks and gripe about it on the last day of the season. In reality I basically couldn't care less if I shoot a deer. That sounds dumb but you guys get it. On the other hand I was obsessed this year way worse than normal for me. I spent probably 250-300 hours hunting. And I was pressing and felt rushed - pressure on myself. So, in some ways there is a little relief it's over. And I need to rethink some things. One nice thing about not filling my MN buck tag is I spent a ton of time with my muzzleloader eliminating areas that were void of deer this fall. ... "Making the box smaller." That will help me for spring scouting and next September with my bow.

I'm thinking about hunting with my bow for a day or two around Christmas. Maybe I should let the 2016 dream die. My dad killed a hog. He's a buck killer. Just manages to whack good bucks frequently.

I would fall into buck hunter category. I used to kill bucks, but have since changed my goals.

I now consider myself a student of mature buck hunting. In pursuit of older bucks.

Ed said that but I didn't believe him. ;)
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

True that.

X2

And Growing Big Bucks makes you a farmer

I know what you are getting at though Stan. I do think the do-whatever-it-takes mentality has a lot to do with it.

In a darker light though that can mean putting big bucks above everything else. Like work, family, personal relationships. Try talking to a big buck killer about anything else for more than 30 seconds.

This is quite the provocative topic (and straw man)! Just makes me think about the sort of pep talk you give someone (or yourself) about going the extra mile everywhere you can. i.e. understanding that the smallest things add up over time.

Yeah.... Most everyone lives for something. Trying to separate a passion from other things is very difficult for some.

I'm a tweener. LOL

I hunt bucks, get a few opportunities a year at big bucks, but don't kill too many. Held out for 4 years and killed a 2.5 year old this past year. I could have killed many many bucks. But define buck. LOL Anything with horns, I could have killed one every year.

I dunno it also all depends on what is the grading scale. I grade my season at how many chances I get on a big buck personally. If I can get a few opportunities a year at a nice 3.5 year old or better buck, or multiple bucks in my area, I chalk it up as a successful season weather I shoot one or not. I think that is more of my tweener type mentality. I haven't yet connected all the dots to consistently put them in the dirt, but at least seeing these deer within bow range gives me hope.

I would say I am a hunter or bucks, more so than the killer. LOL
NEXT YEAR I' HOLDING OUT FOR A BIG ONE!!

There are a lot of us that have killed a buck. We would be buck killers.

Some have killed a big buck. They would be big buck killers.

I can't think of any of us that haven't hunted for a buck or even a big buck for that matter.......yup, buck hunters.

What do you call someone who stirs a pot?

Anyone?

I have read this thread a few times thinking about commenting. I hate labels.

It kinda reminds me of when my nonhunting inlaws try to talk deer hunting with me. I give quick vaque details n move on with the conversation because I know they really dont care and would never understand me trying to explain it to them anyhow.

Unless the person is a CONSISTENT buck killer I have a hard time talking deer hunting with them. Holding a deer hunting conversation with a guy who hunts a box blind over a pile of carrots quickly goes nowhere. Many guys hunt bucks.. Few kill them. I am a buck killer.

Like everyone else I love killing big bucks. I will hold out for a 3.5 year old buck most years. But my time with my family can't be replaced so I try to balance it. My son is 9 and it's time to get him more involved as well. I can see myself killing for the experience in years to come. What i mean by that is- when junior is with me, I want him to experience the kill. Not the harvest- the kill. I want him to understand what we are doing. We are taking a life. I want knownif he is okay with that. So I guess I'm a killer of deer, an opportunist. My goal is a 3.5 year old and better but if family and time restraints tell me otherwise- I'll kill anything. Label me a hunter and a guy that tends to get off topic. Sorry

What about hunters who eat tag soup a lot of years because they pass on ALL bucks under 4 years old and only kill 2 or 3 "mature" bucks every decade??

What are they called??

Compared to another hunter who kills 1 or maybe 2 mature bucks every decade, but kills plenty of 2 and 3 year olds along the way in that 10 year span? He is a killer.

Which decade do you wanna be??

I think killer and hunter mean the same thing to me.

There's a difference between mature buck only hunters who eat tag soup ALOT, and your average general successful buck killer.
