Observing deer vs seeing deer...

Unread postby dan » Sun Dec 11, 2016 7:08 am

When you see deer, do you think about wind direction? Do you wonder why its looking behind it? Do you notice the tail flicks? Do you predict where they are going to come from and go to? Or... Do you just see deer?

I pay attention to every detail and always try to figure out why deer behave how they do. In their world everything is done for a reason. So many guys get deer in front of them and first instinct is to kill them and do not truly observe. It's the deer we don't kill that teach us the most about how they live. You just cannot learn that from reading magazines and such.

Ray Charles could see trails like that!

If you see trails like that in NH - no doubt you will hunt that...

A big Amen to the above. Almost any encounter w/ a deer can correlate to something learned...Ex.I tend to take a backroad to work everyday because I sometimes see bambi along the way....cute, but,why is that critter coming from there heading that way? What is the wind doing? what time of day? What kind of terrain is he traveling? If I am paying attention I can be collecting a little something for the toolbox. Its up to me to use those tools in the future.... :D

I mentally note everything I can these days without even trying, just comes natural after years on the beast. 8-) Heck if other people see deer I am asking questions and mentally noting their sightings as well.

I have been guilty of watching in the past. Been much better this year. I pay attention to deer i jump and don't see. Have had a couple times this year where i hunted a bedding area but picked the wrong bed only to jump deer on the way in or out. Good intel for future hunts.

Since coming to this sight and striving to become a beast, I observe alot of little this I never would of even noticed before. I know these things will ultimately make me a more successful hunter!

I try to but I often have trouble discerning the reasons for the deer doing what they are doing.

I do everything that has been mentioned. Sometimes I think I'm too worried about trying to decipher the what instead of the kill. Hope you all understand what I mean by this.

They show us so much if we understand what is going on. I am city born and raised, so being here has been amazing to see what you guys have for woods knowledge.

Last hunt I had two groups of does within 50 yards and both busted out. I'm OK with both since I know what happened , they didn't just "run away". The first instance was walking in and my scent was carrying in front of me. They had identified the danger and just hoofed it away quietly. The second group saw me in the tree setting up. The wind was not giving them a chance to confirm what they saw so those deer blew out very loudly. It seemed the message was to other deer "Something is NOT RIGHT, stay away!".

Seeing into their world is very, very cool!

Always. That's the fun part of hunting. Seldom am I surprised where I see a deer pop up. And seldom do I hunt a spot that I haven't scouted or at least done a little research of the area and have some idea what and where the deer are doing.

Great video. I don't need to see huge bucks or 47 deer walk by before someone takes a shot. Information on here is unbelievable. I myself am happy to see deer when hunting and as i learn more on here the quality of deer i see will improve.
