Perserving a buck rub?
So I had a whacko idea. I'm trying to create a really cool den for my house. I have a 400sqft rm in my house that is claimed for my huntin stuff. I'm obsessed with everything deer of course so naturally today I was in the woods right behind my house checking out buck rubs. Anywho I had this crazy thought that a buck rub would be a cool addition to my space. Has anyone ever preserved one and had it remain the bright color of a fresh rub? I was thinking I could cut a tree top and bottom...build a natural base for it and flush cut it off at the ceiling. Then I could hot glue fake foliage to some branches for a natural look and then spray clear laquer paint or something over the rub to preserve it...anyone have any opinions?

I think a taxidermist would have some ideas. Seems like a cool idea.

I think I'm gonna cut one and laquer it and see what happens just as a study until I find the big one for my den. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

The clear laquer paint is what i was thinking. ALSO....itd be cool to get 4 of them and cut them to length so as the preserve the rub, but get consistent lrngth, and use thrm for legs on a coffee table of sorts.

Yeah I think clear lacquer would work, I have used it on rough cut cedar wine box before and it gave that same preserving appearance

Maybe try mineral oil or Watco oil. Keep it out of direct sunlight as well. I've considered making a pedestal for one of my mounts from several rubs, but have never gotten around to it. I'm interested to see how this goes.

Use a cedar. Smell good too.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Re: Perserving a buck rub?
Well I first thought of an evergreen or cedar but of course when the tree is cut it dies so therefore the needles fall off that's why I wandered toward the cutting tree and then glueing fake foliage on it

Why bother with foliage? Most if not all is gone in deer season anyway, at least in rifle season in the north.

Re: Perserving a buck rub?
My wife's cousin does taxidermy and he had this stuff you could soak a branch or cut stem in. it sucks it up and preserves it..so fall leaves would turn into like a silk leaf. The color would be preserved and the leaves and stalk would remain pliable. I'm not sure what it's called or if it would even work on a tree being that its much larger than a small limb but check a taxidermist supply. The stuff is pretty neat. If it works you could keep the foliage and all and it would keep the same color and look just like it did in the woods

Re: Perserving a buck rub?
You guys are way ahead of me...clear laquer or poly might work for preservation but will probably darken. Try it and share
Yesterdays common sense is no longer common
