If you seal out the air from the wood, it should hold it's brightness. You can get clearcoats in low gloss. High gloss might make it look cheap. Low gloss polyurethane would be my choice. Cool idea

Thanks for all the input. Hopefully I get time to mess with this idea withing the week or so before those rubs start getting dark. I might try a few different ideas and when I do I'll take some pics and post them.

This is 1 of 2 lamps that I made.
I used minwax polyurethane spray, in the ole fizzy can.
Cedar turns color rather fast, as you can see the base of the lamp is still fresh red cedar.
I made this 3 or 4 years ago.

You might try cutting the tree with the rub and have that floor to ceiling like you describe, but rather than doing hot glue something or other like you describe you could get a second potted cedar or whatever your favorite tree is and set it in front/behind. Of course, that's if you have some light.

If you don't want to see the pot, you could kind of build it in or use the decorative foam rock or something or go cheap, paint some cardboard with textured spray paint and get some moss or something.

Sounds interesting. I would love to do this but cutting a tree would be illegal on public land. I know of a good number of fresh mega rubs that would be cool to do this with.

Yea I'm going to get mine from private land but know of way better rubs on public. I even thought of digging it up and putting it in a wooden planter box. I could trim it up a bit and maybe every other year I could replant it and grab a new one. Crazy I know but it might be cool that way too

wood darkens when exposed to UV. there is no finish that will stop it. It would be better to leave it unfinished and treat it with a wood brightener every so often. you could re rub it to bare new wood as well.
