This site shares and teaches the methods and systems of how to get on public land deer, since its founding. Find the bedding, find the overlooked spots, to start with. Then, the tactics get far more advanced from there. There are some dvds that could really help a hunter out.
Also, Gun seasons in most states are not just traditional they are necessary to trim the heard going into winter. Other benefits to gun season are the many tags that are sold to some that just hunt a day or two, fill the coffers of state managers to provide better deer hunting. Plus using other hunters to move deer helps as well.

Re: Effects of Shotgun/Rifle Season on Deer
Some great advice from the guys already.
If your current results are poor, I'd go into each hunt with a scouting mindset and make some drastic changes. The most successful Beasts scout more than they hunt, and are opportunists. Part of what you learn this year might just be invested time and intel for future seasons.
Scout, scout, hunt, Repeat.
Keep a mobile mindset and when you find fresh tracks and hot sign, you'll know when you're on them. After gun seasons around here, the deer (especially big bucks) are in the thick. Killing a deer with a bow after the gun seasons is 2 or 3 times harder. There's far fewer deer and the ones that made it are half scared to death. As always, hunt as close as you can get to the bedding.
