I just completed my first Out of State hunt in Illinois. I came home with tag soup, BUT I had a blast. Coming from Louisiana, it was a huge difference. First and foremost, NO mosquitos even though it was relatively warm, and I saw lots of deer
I got to see deer chase, push does, cruise, and act like deer in general. I even applied some beast tactics to help me see some deer. In total, I think on public land from a tree stand I counted over 100 deer, and I would bet anything over half were bucks, and ALOT of spikes. I saw probably 8-9 shooters from a stand which to me is 120" or 3.5 year old better just none closer then 60 yards and I just couldn't get cruising off their mind, and I tried everything. I missed my buck on our last morning, nicking a limb and grazing his chest. Boy was I sick, it was very disheartening cuz he was the type of buck I made the trip for, but it was motivation to do better. I just refused to settle for anything less then what I wanted. Now the real question...I'm considering going back up there in the middle of December for a few days for one more go, and was wondering if any of yall hunted the Shawnee during December after the gun hunts and could tell me what to expect from the deer movement and deer behavior?

Re: First OOS Hunt!
We ran into quite a bit of hunters, more then what I thought we would for archery season. We actually knew 4 other groups of Louisiana hunters up there all at the same time. The deeper you went though, the less you saw of people. Honestly though, there was never really getting away from anyone no matter how deep you went. You just have to be in the woods first and out last, hoping they push some deer to you, or stink worse then you do!
