hit a good one

Unread postby Matt6506 » Mon Nov 14, 2016 12:41 pm

Hit a good one tonight, main frame 10 probably mid 150s". The shot was 35 yards quartering away from 23 ft up the tree. Shot looked good just high I could see the fletching hanging out at the entrance but no blood at point of impact or for the first 20 yards. He never kicked, hunched up or anything just took off on a dead sprint with tail up. I'm going back in the morning. Hopefully I'll have some kill pics in the morning. He's a bruiser for sure. Any opinions on shot placement? I feel like if it was just through the back strap I would have blood. I'm hoping liver and lung and just the high hit is the cause of no blood.

Sounds like you don't have an exit hole. If not, I would get a dog on the trail. May be your best bet for recovery. That deer can cover a lot of ground in a hurry with no blood trail.

I'd be surprised if you hit above the spine and it didn't pass through. If you hit below the spine, sounds like dead deer. I'm hoping you find him.

If it was as high as you say? Sounds like it is buried up in the upper part of the opposite shoulder. If that so it is going to be tough?

I never care where entrance is as long as it is in reason. The exit is what I aim for.
I'm reason they call it hunting and not shooting.

Yeah. If he's hit high the chest cavity can will fill with blood before he dumps a lot on the ground. Not easy tracking

Hope you find him. Maybe you got some vitals.

Not terribly uncharacteristic for a quartering away shot to not pass thru,.You shouldn't have a whole lot of arrow sticking out though either.

My guess...
You pounded the shoulder, leg area on the other side causing the no pass thru.
As said, could be a tough track job though with no exit and a high entrance, especially at first.
Deer should be dead in 150yds,.

Pray for no Rain or Coyotes.

Good luck tomorrow!

Good luck!

My only concern is 35yds...not much angle even at 20 some foot high...your exit will only be slightly lower than your entrance...

.

How much arror did you think was sticking out??

If you caught any significant lung your best bet for blood will be when he starts blowing it out his nose. High hits can just be very challenging. If it's into his chest cavity and lodged in the opposite shoulder, he's hurting and will probably lay down quickly. Hopefully you got enough vitals to find him dead in his first bed in the morning. Good luck with the recovery. Hope you get him.

I looked for him for 8 hours yesterday with no luck, I found one speck of blood about the size of a pea that was on a illegal four wheeler trail he crossed about 250 yards from the initial hit. I'm thinking I most likely back strapped him. I don't know I guess I'll just keep my eyes open for buzzards and crows.
