Ground hunting during the rut

Unread postby Bowhunting Brian » Tue Nov 08, 2016 12:34 pm

Anyone do this? A guy I know says it's all he does. It keeps him mobile. If he sees any does, he quickly and quietly moves to that spot because a buck could be in tow. To him it's far easier than getting out of a stand and moving it. Any thoughts?

My brother does this all year and does well. It takes practice to get close!

I did hunt from the ground last Saturday mostly because there were no decent trees to climb.
I cleared the dry leaves around me, used my stand as cover from the trail side and a few minutes later a doe walked by me at 8 yards. She saw me but didn't spook... just stared, stomped and worked her way down the trail.
I was holding out for a buck otherwise I had a few minutes of opportunity.

I've arrowed 4 bucks from the ground during the rut. It's nice not having to haul a treestand around all the time. And it's a lot safer.

I never have...and honestly don't know why...ive only ever shot one deer with a gun (flintlock) from a random ladder stand on property it shouldn't have been on lol...

I've done a spot n stalk on a fall long beard..I've been in the process of setting up my stand and spotted a coyote and made the kill shot from the ground...a rutted up buck is very possible...and I have a bit of ground experience from years of gun hunting...

Tomorrow I'm actually going to be on the ground till atleast I can see...

I know where I am going...I just don't know which tree I need to be in and need to see the trails they are running this season...and take into account the underbrush...

Maybe I will smoke one from the ground!

If the conditions allow, do it. Once you kill one from the ground you'll be hooked. Ground hunting is a little trickier but there are some legit advantages too.

It's a lot of fun from the ground during the rut. If you know where the does are and go REALLY slow, keep a good wind, learn to stop where you can break your outline / get behind something you can get it done from the ground. The key is when in a good area - SLOW.

I think it's definitely doable and not a bad idea at all during this time of year.

For me personally I just feel like I'm at such a disadvantage on the ground with them, its totally a mental thing.

I've been doing it the last couple of years. I like it. It's my goal to take a good one from the ground.

Last Saturday I had a 4pt at 15 yards broadside. He never knew I was there. I managed to take a couple pics of him as he passed. Even though it was a small buck, it was exhilarating! After he left I was shaking. LOL what a rush.

I did one ground hunt this year, had a 6 about 40 yards and also had a 6 and an 8 trot by at 100 yards (I was gun hunting).

I put a tripod over there and hunted again, saw button buck only.

I have only hunted on the ground with my muzzleloader. I am just not experienced enough to still hunt with a bow. I just go to places that i know the deer travel. I sit about 40 yards away depending on the weather, sit at the base of the tree and wait. I have shot a few times with the muzzle loader in the past. but I always hit unnoticed twigs and debris.

Hunting from the ground is just another tool in the bag for me. I prefer a tree stand set up. I hunted from the ground a couple days this year.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I accidentally did this morning. I couldn't find a climbabke tree in the area I wanted to sit, so I picked a spot and sat. Had a tall, narrow 6 broadside at 12 yards about 20 minutes after sitting down. I couldn't believe it. If it wasn't for antler restrictions, he would be dead because I was drawn and settled. He just wasn't quite outside the ears. His G2's were probably 10 inches though.
