My First Deer
I killed two does with a rifle as a kid. My Dad walked me through it. This is my first year on my own, my first year hunting since I was 10 (im nearly 30), and my first year with a bow in my hand.
As planned, I sat the productive pinch where I have my mature 8 and some younger bucks on cam. This was the first sit since my daughter was born, and perhaps one of the last of the season. I got in early, got set quiet, had the wind in my favor and everything looked good. At 6 PM, a doe and two older fawns hit the watering hole 50 yards from me, through the brush. I watched them for 30 minutes and got it all on film. They moved along the trail where my ambush was set, the first fawn came within ten yards of me, oblivious. The doe and second fawn followed just a minute behind. A gust of wind swirled my scent and sent mom into full alert. She started to zone in and looked my way, tail up, ears alert, nose sipping the air. She stomped 3 or 4 times, like she was moments away from spooking. She turned around and stepped into my shooting lane. I took a 20 yd, quartering away shot while she was on the move. I hit high. The arrow impacted just below her spine, paralyzing her. It passed through both lungs and her heart. She bled for 30 seconds and died 5 yards from the shot. This was my first archery kill, and I'm beaming with pride and satisfaction. Today was a good day.
