Found my target buck Dead

Unread postby Ouachitamtnman » Sat Oct 29, 2016 5:15 am

[QUOTE=OuachitaMtnMan;2652152]Found the buck I've been hunting, dead in the river Sunday. Still has a tiny bit of velvet on his horns. I believe he was poached shortly after the landowners took the velvet pic in mid August. Some have mentioned EHD. Couldve been I guess but I had never heard we had that here. I had a real shot at this deer where I was hunting. Hated to find him like that but blessed to find him I guess. At least I didn't hunt him all year and find him in Jan or not find him at all. I actually talked to a buddy in AGFC today and he said the biologist told him we had a significant run of EHD in this area this year. Just my luck that the year I've got the best chance I'm my life to kill a 150 and EHD gets him. Landowner showed me the velvet pic she took and gave me sole permission to hunt her place. I had been watching a herd of does all week knowing it was only matter of time and I'd get a chance at this deer. I was moving cameras after the morning hunt yesterday trying to hone in on him and that's when I found him in the river

my buddy who's a P&Y scorer scored him at 158 1/8" as an 8 with less than 8" of extra points.

Dang bud, that is rough. Like you said at least you didn't hunt him all season then find him in January. I'd try to hold onto that property, looks like it might have a couple other nice ones on it too.

Man that blows.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Hate this for you. The buck to the left in that first picture is pretty nice. Do you have a chance at him?

I'd vote EHD as well. That stuff can be extremely spotty. Tough luck.

Man that is a bummer. I am sorry to hear that. I would be thinking EHD as well.

I agree. I was here last year and let it get to me too much. Had no passion for the rest of the season.

Count your blessings and let it roll. Make it happen on the next Mr. Big. There is one out there somewhere. Go find him.

I went to her house Wednesday and the landowner said her nephew saw my truck there and threw a damn fit because he saw my truck parked there. I was hiding it in the barn for that very reason but had to drive by where the deer usually are to get to it so I didn't like doing that and parked at the front of her property. I told her no problem and that I'd get my stand and stuff and not hunt there and told her I was sorry I caused her any trouble and I truly was. It was made easier by the fact that he's dead and her house is surrounded by public hills that I can hunt anyway so no big deal. what passes me off is that this punk would intimidate an old lady, who takes care of his ailing mother while he's off working the pipeline, into decisions about her own land. She's a widow and she's like family...anyway just pissed me off. Ivery got lots of private land to hunt and mainly it's convenient for my kids but tbh, I kill 95% of my deer on public land. That said, we've got a hay meadow that's about a mile from her place through the woods and my FIL and hay cutter made one pass back there and jumped a giant with 2 other bucks in late September and I assumed it was this group of deer but after finding that buck dead with velvet meaning he died in late August/early September, I realize it's a different buck they saw. My FIL said it was as big or bigger than the dead deer. I doubt it but even if it's within 20" I'd be tickled. I've got a bullet proof setup there and other than the fact that my son has shot at 3 does in there and missed them all, it should be good. Imy gonna try not to go back there until Nov 12 when the gun season opens to let it chill out. Maybe the weekend before, during the youth hunt, I'll bring the kids in there and let them get a crack at then but I already told my boy that is the new honey hole since the other deer is dead and we can't hunt there anymore sobwe're gonna chill out on the doe shooting for a month or so in there. Things are just getting good and I've got some other big bucks to try and nail down and I'm excited...just wish the dang weather would cooperate. it's been 50s in the morning g and 80s in the evening and shows to be so for several weeks. Good luck guys and thanks for the "condolences" lol
