So I'm crossing this floating bog..
In hip boots, full back pack, bow in one hand walking stick in the other. With each step the floating bog sends out a wave in all directions. My stick breaks thru and I don't feel bottom. In the dark. Then the thought occurred to me, man I do some crazy stuff.

Re: So I'm crossing this floating bog..
That's a scary feeling ain't it???
Last year the water in the swamp I scouted was higher than anticipated..I was only in there in the winter...
"Eh...I made it this far..I can wade across that little water...it's warm out..".
The only thing I kept dry was my bow....somehow. It truly was bottomless..but had 1-2ft of water on it..I fell forward onto cattails and kinda crawled out onto the roots..and had to leap frog from cluster to cluster..
Needless to say...I didn't see any deer...the bedding area was within 150yds during the entire fiasco..
On the way out I found a dry land route...used it this year and had an awesome hunt...
Sometimes I wonder about myself lol...I swam a flooded creek in spring turkey season one year...the birds pitched down to the fields across it..boy was that cold...and when I got across the birds were 2 fields down next to a house and very content with a flock of hens lol. I may have cried real tears..I can't remember lol.

Yeah I don't like floating bogs...broke through the ice on one a few years ago while scouting, caught myself on my elbows. I never touched bottom. Not a good feeling.

I like bogs, they talk to you, let you know if you are hitting a thin spot. Other swamps always seem to get me, one step is fine and the next is up to inseam in muck.

I fell through to elbows as well a few years ago. I caught myself with a scrub overhanging. I thrashed around like a maniac, couldn't get out. Finally tried to calm calm thought of guys in quicksand. And little by little came out. Man my legs and stomach muscles hurt for a few days after that one.afterwards

Re: So I'm crossing this floating bog..
I went through one a couple times fishing this summer, awful feeling.
How did you end up getting out? I've been worried about it a couple times loaded down with a stand and all that business.

John, I'd swim for a spot that looks that good!!!!!
It ain't so bad as long as it's not real cold out!
That muck stinks though...I really doubted a deer would wind me after my fiasco...I was covered in that nasty sludge and duck weed...

You could disappear in a floating bog. I won't mess with them anymore.
