Honestly I can't really say what tree species bucks prefer to rub because I have seen them do it on all of them. From clusters of dogwood to popples and pines it all seems to depend on whatever tree is dominant in the area I am hunting. In the bigwoods I see a majority of rubs on smaller pines with popples not far behind. Marsh and swamps I see rubs on popples and cedars. Hills I have seen a good number of rubs on younger oak trees. Like I said really no pattern and all depends on the region.

x2. Perhaps they like the smell of certain trees over others?

I see alot on alders also. Both mature and small bucks. The bigger deer in my parts will hit cedar, poplar, and sometimes maple. Some of the smallergic guys will rub soft woods like spruce, fir, and pine.

Pine and Cedar down here. If you run across a patch of cedars, there will be rubs. They do rub other trees but you can pretty much count on cedars.

So here is something interesting, there are several votes above for poplar - where I am in central NY I have lots of poplar and they don't touch it, yet every striped maple in the woods is hit. Here they also hit anything in the pine family. In both cases this is up to say forearm size.

In addition to the common characteristics mention above I would add they like to rub on anything fragrant and sticky/sappy.

I see a lot of lone cypress trees getting hit, especially when they are surrounded by hard woods or trash trees on a ridge.

Cedars, Pines, small oaks. The place I hunt in south Georgia has a grove of magnolias in a draw with a natural spring. They consistently rub the small magnolias.

99% of the time where I hunt--- Northwest NC and Northeast MS is Cedar trees. They seem to love the smell of the fresh cedar, almost as much as I do.
