A fun Hunt
I had a pretty cool hunt tonight and I have not shared anything in a while, so I figured this would be a good time to do so. I checked a few cameras today and had one spot where a decent 130/140 class buck was coming out of the swamp.
This swamp is 100% cedar swamp and transition lines are hard to make out so it has taken me a lot of trial and error to figure out exactly where they bed. Nothing has been making it out of the swamp before dark so I decided to get as close as I could to the known bedding. I cut a track heading in and was soon bumping into a line of rub after rub. Based on the size and height of the rub, I felt confident that this was the same deer. Here are two photos that I took on the way in.
Over the past few years, I have learned that you really need to move like a snail through this cedar swamp. A deer can pick you off from over 100 yards away because there isn’t a lot of brush. From the field edge to where I wanted to setup was about 100 yards. The known bedding was about 80 yards beyond that. From the time I started at the edge of the swamp till the time I was setup, It was almost two hours. I stepped from log to root to moss to avoid breaking any sticks or crunching in the leaves. I only moved when the wind blew. In time, I was setup. The wind became calm and the milkweed was flying true for once. I was sitting next to a clearing from an old logging road that offered me a 50 yard shot if I was willing to take it. As I sat there, I kept picturing him coming through the cedars at me when suddenly I caught movement and sure enough, here he came. It was at least 45 minutes before closing time. This is why it’s so important to get up close to these beds at this time of the year. This deer was not hitting the field until after dark and here I had him coming at me in broad day light. I threw the camera on him and kept trying to make sure it was him and not something smaller. By the time I decided that I was going to shoot, I had a small opening at 40 yards. I knew I was either going to hit a tree, or hit him in the vitals because they were the only thing showing. I let the arrow fly and god only knows where it went. There was no blood and I found my light up nock. I followed where her took off for 30 yards through the mud and it was a clean miss Although I didn’t get him, it was super rewarding to put a plan together and have it all work out for the most part. I figured I would share because it was exciting and maybe someone else can take something away from it. If he shows up on camera again in the same spot, I will head in after him. Otherwise I’ll give it a few weeks and another try.
Here is the short clip I got of him moving through the swamp. He was out of the frame when I shot, but I figured I would post this anyway.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.
