What is your strategy for using doe bedding throughout the pre-rut and rut?
How close or far away do you try to be from doe bedding?
If you think a buck is scent checking down wind of doe bedding, how far away is he likely to be in doing this?

Rut setups - doe bedding

Re: Rut setups - doe bedding
My best set-up on doe bedding are down-wind or quartering down-wind sets. Put yourself downwind of where you think buck will be traveling downwind of doe bedding to scent check. I've seen bucks scent checking just inside of cover and outside of cover but both are downwind. Each scenario gives a buck the advantage, security or visibility.
If you want to kill a deer you have to be in the woods.

Nothing is 100%, so you can't really put a number on how far downwind they will cruise. A lot depends on the lay of the land, but also keep in mind bucks will scent check doe trails on any side of the bedding....upwind, downwind, to the side, etc....just depends on which way the bucks cruise in from. I've even seen bucks go right through the middle of a doe bedding area while cruising. Setup where you can cover as many buck travel scenarios as possible.
