Hunting like a wolf...
I will spare the long story..
Today I had the right wind and breezy conditions I wanted to hunt a spot I found a buck bed in a few winters ago..
It's a small piece behind an abandoned farm house..2 thick ditches converge into 1 bigger ditch...big ditch has oaks..corn on 3 sides of this area...water...apple trees...shady pine stand..it has it all..with the security of a house that keeps normal hunters out...
I have permission to hunt there and the house has been vacant so long it's falling in..
I parked a ways down the road and hiked in rather than parking at the house...
It took me a good half hour to go not even 100yds to the spot...walking when the wind gust to cover my noise..
Took me a few minutes to decide on a tree...options were thin and the brush was much thicker than I realized it'd be..
I got my first stick on..then my 2nd
Realized 3 sticks would get me to where I wanted to be I grab a 3rd stick..my stand and climb up..on the 2nd stick I peak toward the buck bed to make sure he can't see me if he's home..I didn't suspect that particular buck was alive still but figured another may have moved in..
As I did I spotted movement...
Coyote!
I quickly and carefully climbed down and got the stand off my back..it stopped on the far bank of the creek...
I knew if it went any farther it was gone...
I fought getting my bow untied but finally did...
Got an arrow and and drew back and sent it...
Shot looked a bit low but I was confident i smoked it..
Hunted till dark and didn't see anything else..he came from where I expected deer to come from..so I didn't have high hopes..
It took me a good hour to track him...
He went 150-175yds or so...blood was sparse..tough going...last 50yds he was leaking good..
How he went that far is beyond me..the shot was low..(23.5yds and held the 20 pin low on him..).
His lungs were literally outside his chest on the entrance hole..the grizztrick opened him up BIG!
I can say a few years back I'd never seen him let alone killed him...I wouldn't have hunted there..I wouldn't hunt the way I do..being so cautious..quiet...stealthy... would had the climber and not a Lone Wolf..
Of course as I was tracking him a deer was blowing at me coming up from the big ditch...and the little finger was covered in buck sign...he actually bled on a rub..1" sapling entered to nothing and the top ripped off...don't usually see such aggressive rubs this early...
My first coyote with a bow!!
Not a big buck...but a pretty cool kill...I've killed a few coyotes and trapped a few others but I know several guys that have never killed one and some never see them..not rare..but not an every day kill either...

Nice! Its not easy to get a shot off on a coyote at 20 yds from the ground!

Re: Hunting like a wolf...
Thanx!! Exciting 30 seconds...and 3 hours of suspense waiting on stand lol...that was horrible...and my arrow looked way too clean from the tree...I knew I saw and heard the impact but that made me 2nd guess it...
Jake,. I must have a knack for it...a few years ago... actually the same farm...I spotted a group of longbeards in the field next to standing corn as I was walking to my spot..
I dropped my stand and came up with a plan to attempt a "spot n stalk".
I got to where they should be and they weren't there...figured I spooked them..on a hunch I peeked around the other side of the field and they were coming right for me...22yds i let it fly...
Fall long beard from the ground spot n stalk with a bow..tough hunt to pull off...again, I used the wind and standing corn to cover my noise...
Many hunters focus completely on deer...but hunts like the coyote and turkey are just plain fun and exciting...that's what it's all about for me...

great hunt nice work taking out the yote...just curious did you gain any other intel to help on future deer hunts while following the blood trail or while sitting on stand on this hunt? sounds like a great spot you got there...

Re: Hunting like a wolf...
Thanx guys!
Kokes, I wasn't in there completely blind..I've been in there plenty of times...just never deer hunted it or picked trees or learned how the deer actually use the area..the 2 ditches are like thick fingers..
They show great deer sign..I know deer bed in the finger I was I and where the yote came from...
But I'm guessing with all the foliage and lack of pressure so far the bigger/more open ditch is where the deer were...which was confirmed by the deer blowing at me right after dark...
The big ditch runs a ways down and meets another big ditch..both get hunted heavily...but that probably hasn't happened yet and the deer aren't pushed into the hidden thick hidey holes..
Not to mention there is standing corn everywhere this year..
