I hope you get an arrow in him. I was doing some reading and came across this on Outdoor Life. They said the lunar eclipse is set for December 21st this yr. The first time the lunar eclipse has occured during a hunting season since 2003. When it happened in 2003, 136 bucks were harvested that day that made it to the P&Y record books. Hopefully it will restore your faith and you can get a good crack at him.

Back to the teeth, found the pics. Here are cross sections of the above bucks front tooth sanded down thin and stained pics from a scanning electron micoscope. Since I really don't know what I'm looking at for layers these are just hypothetical guesses. Pretty neat to see the layers regardless of how they actually should count out, eh?

Cool pictures Mud... My buck from gun season had the nose and body of a 2 1/2... If you put a 70 inch rack on him every one would swear 2 1/2... I think everyone who is calling it 3 1/2 is doing so soley based on antlers.

Re: How Old is That Deer?
So many people look at antlers and think that's a great way to score deer, WRONG. Here's a great example of a confirmed 3 or 4 1/2 year old WILD deer taken here in Iowa. Shot back in 2000 by Larry Zach, it's around 240 inches I believe. When I got to see better pictures of it you could see how "young" he looked.

OK, granted your average 4.5 year old deer isn't that big but it just goes to show that aging deer is friggin tough.

Cool pictures Muddy.
You think aging deer is tough......I think shooting them is tougher.

Re: How Old is That Deer?
There's a lot of people who believe the world record Milo Hanson buck is a 3 1/2 y/o.
And yes Dan, I was basing my guess on your deer solely on the antlers. I couldn't tell much about the body from the pic I was looking at.

A buck will see you three times, and hear you twice, but he's only gonna smell you once.
