Scoring in a buck contest

Unread postby Peeps22 » Thu Sep 15, 2016 2:43 am

Some guys and i thought it would be kind of cool to start a buck pool for bow and gun hunting here at work.

Its only $10 to get in for bow and $10 for gun so theres really not a whole lot of money at stake for guys to get real worked up over. Its more just for fun and bragging rights to one another.

What are some ways that we could score, keeping in mind that we all dont live really close to each other and some guys hunt up north so we wouldnt be able to see every deer in person.

We were thinking maybe add up total points, inside spread, and length of G2's? Its easy enough to snap a picture with the tape measure on the deer so that way i guess we have a way to see numbers. Any other ideas on how to score for something like this?

I was in a contest like that before. They had two prizes. One for most points and one for widest inside spread. Overall score didn't count. I remember they had tie breaker rules also

There's a couple contest around here and what they do is measure longest tine, number of points, inside spread, and biggest mass measurement. It's obviously not PY standards but it's a fairly easy and fun for most guys who want to enter there bucks for pools.

Gross Score
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

$10 bucks.

Man you are lucky there. My hunting friends have us pony up $50!!

They run ours strictly by weight so not a comparable setup.

No experience with this sort of thing but just a suggestion some bucks have longer G3s than G2s so maybe allow the use of whichever typical tine is the longest... Or something of that sort.

Inside spread and points you can hang a ring on. Add them together. It's fun and it's an easy standard.

I've been part of an office pool where everyone throws in $20 every year. First one to tag a gross b/c of any big game animal gets the kitty. The pool has been going for several years now and is getting rather large.

I don't go in buck pools because they shed too much and you get hair in your mouth too easily

We do one at work I put together. Scoring is total tines over 1" plus inside spread. Tie breaker goes to longest tine.
