Large Tree Stand Setup

Unread postby purebowhunting » Tue Sep 13, 2016 1:35 pm

Anyone have and tips or tricks for hanging stands in trees larger than your climbing stick straps allow? I ran into a few instances last year where my tree of choice was a bit too large to get my straps around. One was a red oak tree the other I can think of was a double tree that if I could have gotten 1 stick on I would have been set. I have some 1-1/2" climbing webbing I've been thinking of making extensions with for the straps and pack them in so if needed I'd have them. Anyone try this of have different ideas?

I always carry 2-3 screw in steps to get above the but of the tree. If it's larger than that I usually move on

I carry 2 24" 1/2" wide slings to use as ext straps. No weight or bulk to the slings.

Red oaks seem to always be too large. I've done it but it wasn't very safe.

I'm assuming you made these from 1/2" webbing?

I hate climbing the really large trees......even with the LW strap extensions I get an uneasy feeling having to more or less throw the straps around and catch them. Screw in steps work well, but you're still limited on hand holds. I'll usually only hunt big trees as a last resort.

I carry two of these with me at all times just in case. They are cheap and really come in handy on those trees that are really wide at the bottom.

Ratchet strap material with no metal on them and tie loops on both ends... I loop the one through the tree strap and use the left over loop to hook onto stick... Very simple and even though its not TMA approved by any means, it definitely wont come loose

I ran into this as well last year on some white pines, good to know there is an actual extension out there for LW.

For cost effective efficiency I would just use a rope system and tie off the sticks, (lots of videos on this) then you can make the rope as long as you need.

I've made extensions out of rope. Just tie loops on both sides. One of my best spots had a huge willow tree. The base was huge. Had to use an extension. Have had to use them on old walnut and hickory trees also
