I'll start by saying I have yet to purchase the DVD's but will do so soon! I went to check out my first swamp/marsh kind of area last weekend and it was haha. Everything in there was up to my neck or past my head and hard as to see over and I must admit, it made me feel uneasy...There were some spots around trees with much shorter grass that I could see through more easily and noticed lots of tracks running through and I even had a deer blow at me but couldn't see where it was. As I pushed on I watched some of this tall grass part like the Red Sea as I kicked something else up not long after my last encounter. All of this right near a big water hole. It was a maze to get out because I kept running into parts I couldn't cross and I pretty much had to go back the way I came, quite frustrating. Anyway, I'm sure it holds some good deer and I doubt many men pony up and go in.. I know it even deters me now but I feel like it's a money shot. How in the do some of you do it? And what sort of things should I be looking for if I can manage to get myself back in there? I read about finding oaks if possible and it does border a farm field of some sort and a river runs the backside. It seems like dynamite if one can tolerate it and break it all down.

Most of your questions will be answered once you buy the dvd's to be honest. I would start there and then any clarifications will be easier to explain.

Re: Can we talk swamps/marshes?
Swamps/marshes vary so much, almost impossible to narrow it down in a few sentences.
It sounds like you found an area that most guys will not put the effort into penetrating or may feel it is too hard of an area to hunt, that is the easy part. Now you have to figure out how the deer are using it and how you can exploit the area and then actually execute the plan. Some swamps/marshes are setup better for bow, with defined bed/travel corridors and tight pinches. Some are setup for gun with more vast areas where the deer sort of meander through and bed more 'randomly' (for lack of a better word). Wish I could be more of a help...

No Shortcuts. No Excuses. No Regrets.
Everybody's selling dreams. I'm too cheap to buy one.

Re: Can we talk swamps/marshes?
i had those exact thoughts of whether or not I should be trying to bow hunt it or stick to gun season. It's unlike anything I've ever hunted or stepped foot in for that matter. Here's a couple photos... The first one reminds me of how it's looking now but the second one shows the features better. It extends down to the right even further but this is the area where I have an access point to get in.. Some other spots are boardered by private property from the looks of things. I think the biggest challenge for me is getting over my fear of not being able to see much as I traverse through the nonsense... Sorry to sound like a school girl haha.

Swaps are hard to scout this time of year, very hard to hunt early season too. They are just extremely thick and you can't see the holes or deep water as well. Best to scout them in the off season if you can, better yet scout them in the winter or spring if you live in an area where everything freezes. Once you reason starts just scout them with the stand on your back and setup if you find any sign. Some of my worst adventures are early season swamp hunts going in blind, you have to be a little crazy to dive in.

X2 and if you are trying to traverse it to scout early season you are gonna blow a bunch of deer out it is just gonna happen. Find the transistions and use that to manuvere. What state are you hunting? Some guys better at this then me can chime in, but if I was late to the game and wanted to hunt it I would find a transistion line I could use for access with the wind in my favor and slowly walk it until I found fresh sign and setup there. You won't be able to see a bed 5 feet off the transition right now in most of my swamps.

Until you get the DVDs, check out the podcast board, use the search there are more than enough map help threads to use as an example. Also, Dan does speak about them on the wired to hunt podcasts. Just search his oame on W2H site
