And so it begins.

Unread postby mainebowhunter » Mon Sep 05, 2016 8:48 am

Yesterday, my son and I jumped in my rig at 7am and headed for the store. Saturday was the big day. We were going to buy his first deer hunting rifle. Ended up picking up a Ruger .243, bolt action. Bought a scope with good eye relief. He was so excited. Drove an hour home with the gun across his lap. ($24.50 box for shells was a bit suprising)

Today was the big day when we would head to the local range so he could have a chance to shoot. Well, he was disappointed when he got there. There was another shoot going on. So back home we go.

Felt so bad. Decided it would be ok for him to take one shot into the dirt pile out back. BOOM! Automatic perma-grin. He was pretty excited. Gun really is going to be great deer gun for him. Kicked a bit more than the .22 :D

Lot of fun to see the light in a kids eye.

Good stuff Maine, good luck with your son's journey. Point them in the right direction and they usually turn out well seems like.

Actually, we do not have a youth season. We have a youth day. Not really a lot of opportunities but hope to get him on a group of does hitting acorns.

Great for kids to sit down and discuss gun safety. He has a .22 and a BB gun. Neither is he allowed to use without proper supervision. As he gets older, that will change.

Very cool! I think we all remember our first gun. Something he will cherish for a long time.

Very Nice! I bought my son his first deer rifle about 5 years ago. Same rifle, a Ruger, .243. Great caliber, he hunts deer & yotes with it.
