Thats some practical education there, thanks for posting. As you can tell by our excitement over a fake print, we're all certified deer addicts here on the Beast. The most practical knowledge base anywhere!!!

18.5 hours old at 5 AM. Going to work soon so a flashlight pic. Conditions: 68 degrees with 96% humidity.

Note: one of the kiddos stepped on the track while I was pitching to them after dinner. Things happen. I know that I have stepped on my share of tracks, so no big deal.

I'll keep observing this but will probably only post any pics if something interesting happens. I'll probably have to do a really muddy spot for my next experiment.

Very good idea! I have thought of this as well, but more to put tracks under a buddies stand

I am interested in seeing aging in mud and sand, very educational.

I didn't really pay attention to this at first. As I read through while waiting on a conference call, I realized there is a lot of great info here.
Thanks for what you are doing.
I have definitely taken for granted the info I have been overlooking as I see this.
Know what I will be doing during this conference call : )

In his tracking book Tom Brown does something similar. He used a rounded dowel. Then recommended making a new mark at what ever time intervals you were interested in seeing. That way you had many different "tracks" to compare at one time.

He recommended doing it in different soils and even in snow.

I always wanted to do this but never got to it. Good on you!!!!!

Track deposited into dry cracked ground 36 hours ago. 18 hours ago a heavy rain came through.

Image

Edges are more crumbled than prior to the rain. It is not as deep as dirt has settled into the low spots. The right side prior to the rain had larger clean edges about 3/4 in size between cracks. These edges are no longer crisp and have been pitted somewhat. Similar to the rain pitting the sand picture below. Cracking of the ground around the print remained even after the rain. These cracks are not as crisp and clean. They now look more fuzzy or pitted from rai drop impact. I'm sure there would be more to report if I was touching the print to see if clods had reattached to the ground, but I do not want to change the print picture by disturbing it. Small rocks have settled into the impression but are resting on top, not pressed into the earth.

Sand print 36 hours old, 12 hours after a heavy rain. Shaded location.

Image

This print is not as deep or wide as sand is washing into the impressions.
