I was smiling so big my face about cracked. That picture is really special to me and not because of the buck in it.

You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Yes absolutely. Treestand can be a bow hunter's greatest asset or greatest liability depending on the terrain.

YUP!!

I wrote an article for Wired to Hunt as a guest writer on this exact subject.

I wish I could revise it... too late now  Also note I wrote it pre-Beast. Note how I don't talk about bedding at all

Just read your article. Very nicely written.

Great point Joe. I have killed quite a few bucks on the ground, that said I actually don't like hunting on the ground, I do it out of necessity. My killing success is so much better from a tree it's almost a no brainer for me. I can't show you the pictures of the bucks I messed up on, when hunting from the ground. Trust me there are many more botches than kills.

Even those Iowa bucks will only stand there, for about three or four arrows flung at them before they walk away. ;)

October 24 1999 May not look it but net scored 131 4/8 @ just 13 6/8 wide. My 1st and only P&Y in the books

Image
October 20 2009 Never officially scored

Both bucks were shot from natural cover in hill country. 2 of the most exciting hunts i've had.

Loving this thread! My first goal is to kill a buck with a bow.. Second, to kill a deer from the ground with a bow. P&Y will come eventually, I'm still learning.

I shot this guy from the ground, standing at the base of three close growing trees on the bank of a small creek. I shot another buck from that spot a couple of years later, but he was borderline P&Y.

For those of you on the fence about hunting from the ground, just give it a try. Yes it's tougher to pull off but it can be surprisingly easy too. You just need to be extra aware, and go through the scenarios in your head. "If he comes on this trail, position for a shot in this lane, draw when he gets behind that tree (or take advantage if he looks away or puts his head down)...

Plan ahead for what might happen, don't wait and see what happens, then react... If that makes sense.

Like Stanley said in the success from the ground thread, "after hunting from the ground, hunting from a tree stand is a piece of cake."

It will make you a better hunter. Don't worry about screwing up! Over the years I've had sets that I didn't think would work very well. Sometimes they work just fine, sometimes they don't. There's only one way to find out...

maybe you've done this, and I have just missed it being posted. Would you be willing to do a wall pic with your big bucks from over the years?

Killed some nice two year olds from the ground but no net p&y. Love still hunting and/or setting up with natural cover on the ground. Got a few areas to hunt this year that will need to be from the ground. Too much cover for a tree but the bucks are in there.
