Quartering deer/packing out
So there's some spots I want to hunt but I feel like it would be absolute or impossible for me to drag a deer out... Im the size of a hobbit and weigh 130 pounds soaking wet haha. Is it hard to quarter a deer? Are you wasting much meat by doing so? What packs would be good for the job? I've shot one deer and it wasn't huge or a far drag out... any feedback is greatly appreciated!

You don't really lose any meat, I take off the legs, back straps, tender loins. If you have a big pack it can be done in one trip, otherwise it might be two trips. Which still beats dragging a deer over a mile that is for sure. First time you do it will be a little interesting but after that it goes pretty fast. Hopefully you get to carry out a nice cape too.

Give me a call, I'll help pack out meat anytime of the day!
Watch some western hunting videos. Gutless method, thousands of feet of elevation, miles from the vehicle!! My kind of torcher and adventure!

Re: Quartering deer/packing out
If I'm packing one out I sure hope it's got some decent head gear :) and thanks Tim, I hope I'm calling ya one of these days this season because it means I sealed the deal haha! I just watched some videos and it doesnt seem to bad. I just don't have much experience skinning and cutting them up. I suppose ya can't screw it up too bad! The cape thing I would like to learn more about... Although I've just considered a European mount depending on size/funds

When I went caribou hunting we did the gutless method. Three guys we packed it all out in one trip 5 miles. I've never done it with a deer. The older I get the more I think about it . I'm not even sure if it's legal in the states I hunt

Re: Quartering deer/packing out
Others pretty much summed it up. Your physical size isn't that big of a deal as long as you are in decent shape, don't have major back problems that sort of thing. If you were 50 lbs overweight I would say it would be tough.
There are some youtube vids on the gutless method of cutting up a deer/elk. I recommend that. No need to field dress first its a waste of time unless you have to let the animal lay for a while and then do it to cool off.

2nd the gutless method, I've done it once and it was pretty slick. Another packing tip, I always bring along a hack saw as well, if you are packing out quarters taking the hooves off usually saves on a little weight and makes packing them a little easier.

Chris makes it look easy, but cutting the legs of with a knife at the joints is doable it just takes a little time at first.

Re: Quartering deer/packing out
I have never packed one out, but be sure to check your laws. With CWD such a touchy subject, I would check in case something changed. My state laws as of now are have make every effort possible.
Side question - has anyone just cut one in half and made to 2 trips like you would packing? I have been told by too many people to do it, yet iv never seen it
