It's when absenteeism goes up and productivity goes down in the workplace.

Re: What is the rut in reality?
The rut is when I become a non functioning member of society during any and all daylight hours, taking weeks off of work at a time and using sick days when appropriate.
All joking aside, its best time of year to be in the whitetail woods. Enjoy the rut for what it is, but don't allow it to be your priority in life. I put a lot of time, effort, and vacation time into the rut...maybe too much. There's always a cheap campground to stay at and a tag to be filled in another state, and by the end of November I am exhausted.

Rut is the breeding season.
In another topic Dave T said something to the effect of when the velvet comes off. I agree it might not be very noticeable stage but really they change. Dan shot a buck doing light chasing in sept. Not long ago, If my memory serves me right.

Re: What is the rut in reality?
Lot of interesting ideas on what we consider to be the rut. I suspected we would get many different ideas. Some have even put it into phases. I'm wondering about the pre rut and post rut? Those words suggest prior to and after/later so are they really part of the rut?
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

Just verbiage.... that man uses to explain buck behavior.... IMHO the pre rut is the rut but most does have not come in, post rut is still the rut but most does have been bred.

This reminds me of high school when the teacher asks a question and a bunch of people raise their hand and start blurting out answers. Now I'm waiting for Stan to be the teacher and blow everyone's mind.
