New member, where to start looking for buck beds
Hi everyone, I'm new member to the site. I stumbled upon this forum while listening to a podcast of Mr. Infalt talking about buck beds. His videos and podcast has me wanting to change up my scouting/hunting methods in regards to hunting bucks. Attached is a screen shot of the public land i have by my home. Im in the military, so i have 3 years to figure this place out and hopefully have a little success. Any help on where to start looking for buck beds would be greatly appreciated.

My advice is buy the DVDs Marsh Bucks and Hill Country. That will really help lay the groundwork for what you need to look for. Good luck!

Head east to the river and creeks, check out all the insides of the oxbows for bedding. Then I'd check the perimeter well defined edge of the woods blocks just west of the river and pay special attention to points and bowls. Those will probably be the highest odds locations.

I would suggest scouting it in blocks. Break the Map up like a grid and scout it one section at a time. Looks like a promising area. Mark up your map with what you find and be sure to mark where other hunters access, travel and hunt. The best deer will be where the people don't go.

Re: New member, where to start looking for buck beds
When I first find a property there are three things I look for.... or should i day three things I look for in close proximity.... COVER, water and natural browse/food...... most of the really good buck beds I've found have had ask three within 50-100 yards. Ask yourself, if I were a buck that didn't want to get shot where would I go. Keep in mind learning how humans use the property will also take time. Then, during the off season walk..... A LOT! walk all the transitions, edges, elevation and especially those areas that often go overlooked... like a line tree way out in the middle of a marsh, or CRP field, etc..... bigger bucks will be where they get shot the least.... you just have to figure out where that is on any given property. There are some guidelines but no rules. Even spots we talk about allot here won't be worth crude if a lot of hunters are in the know and hit them..... go where others don't...... it really is that simple. And that hard :)
PS. There is a ton of info in the archives, grab some coffee and put into these and I think sine areas will jump out in your mind?

Re: New member, where to start looking for buck beds
See if u cant get that image in a winter time frame and then u can see the transitions a heck of a lot better... If google hasnt taken any aerials of the place during that time frame (which i have been a victim of) then walk what the rest of the guys r saying but i especially like that longer looking island that is about in the middle of the pic with the two coves in it, as well as the thicker looking island thats way east if the pic... Love the way it comes close to that river/stream and even the little creek that breaks off from the stream but would have to check it for sure
