Best Use of Unexpected Time in June
I just found out I have Friday evening all to myself as my wife and kids are going to stay at my in-laws. My thoughts immediately turned to various things I could do towards preparing for the fall deer hunting season. What would you do with unexpected time in late June?
- scout public land
- sit observation stand
- practice shooting
- stay up all night glassing and shining
- study maps
- watch Dan's DVD for the umpteenth time
- coyote hunt
- knock on doors for more private access
- check trail camera
- place another trail camera
- others?
I'm leaning towards a combination of practice shooting and sitting an observation stand and coyote hunting.
How would you think through this decision? What factors would help make the decision for you?

I need to go check on my water access for a couple spots. Two spots i wanted to access by canoe but i need to get out there and try it to see if its actually doable now that the water is covered in geen algae. Thats what i would do.

Practice shooting then go glassing and shining around areas you can hunt. Maybe go check out some new public and look for deer sign old rubs and big tracks. Maybe prepare a couple trees. Im going down to Ohio and my Michigan properties this weekend to hang cams and glass. Last I checked shining is illegal in Ohio.

I would say your plan sounds good, you can practice shooting, sit at an observation stand and hunt coyotes all at the same time. win, win win

Re: Best Use of Unexpected Time in June
I would set cams if you haven't already done so, and I would review my spring scouting.
I like to review GPS coordinates, notes, access routes, best winds for that spot, and previously successful hunts and try and game plan for the upcoming season. Did a spot look better for early season, pre-rut, rut, late? If you have multiple spots, make a rough time line of your spots and when you will hunt them. I use that as a guide coming into the season so I am hopefully maximizing my chances every sit. In my opinion, it is worth the effort, plus it keeps a guy thinking about the spots he's scouted and why they looked like they were worth a hunt.

I would identify which one of these would most help me today to meet my goals this coming fall. If my shooting was lacking I would spend time there. If I had some new ground I would scout, place cameras, etc., If I didn't have enough good hunting ground I might knock on doors or in my case seek out more public land and scout it. So for me, my thought process would revolve around what would help me the most today to meet my Oct/Nov goals. Everything you mentioned is legit - but probably one or two would benefit you the most today.

Since you only have one evening I think glassing and shining late into the night if legal would be your best option. Many bucks are putting on serious growth right now so locating them can really give you a headstart for the season.

With a little more time to plan I would have made sure my insurance was in order faked my own death and hunted/scouted/shined/ran cameras/ til my heart was content and lived wherever I wanted for the rest of my life

If the heat bugs and poison ivy /snakes don't scare you away, the in the woods time is usually more important.
Drop cams, inventory of specific crops, check for large tracks at water, and observe at dark.
Man, the list is long and days are short.

Haha...great reply. The point of my post was to get me planning something more structured so that I avoid this outcome which I would have defaulted to. Haha.
