I'm thinking about making a little waterhole. There is no other water on my 40 acres, so I'm hoping they will use it. For those of you that hunt waterholes, do the bucks use them at certain times of the year more than other? I would think rut time would be a good time to sit over it.

Re: Water?
my water hole gets most buck action at night.
hold deer in the area, but not active during shooting hours. I basically use it for taking inventory.

Re: Water?
If you got no other water I think it could help hold deer on the property. Not sure it would actually be an aid to help you kill deer at that specific site.

Re: Water?
I've dropped my share at water holes. All deer need water and they will drink when they get thirsty... hot weather and rut can increase likelihood of daytime visits. But it also depends on how much water there is... same as food, if there is an over abundance it may be hard to isolate which one on any given day.

Re: Water?
In the hill country video they killed a couple nice bucks early season over water in the staging area. I would put it close to bedding. Im digging in a cattle water tank this summer in a good spot. My property has no water except when the swamp is flooded in spring. Google Jeff sturgis. He has good articles about water holes. Their is good info on this site also with a search

Re: Water?
To echo what hawthorn said, put that waterhole close to bedding. If your in hill country and have bedding points the hill country dvd shows just where you would want your waterhole located. There are some good threads on here about water and thermals, I would recommend checking those out. like any other good spot, I'd hunt it sparingly, once or twice early season and a couple times during the rut. Hunting downwind of the waterhole during the rut could produce.

Re: Water?
I put a hole in last week in a gnarly pine stand with lots of sign. Its kind of an exploratory spot but already had a good sized depression that intermittently held water with some good bedding nearby so I found a set were three trails intersect going right two it. I did a little improvement and I had a thick tent foot print laying around so I gave it a shot. I'm still kind of concerned about a hoof going through it. Even when I've sunk baby pools I usually line them with sand so I don't get a puncture but it was remote and worth a sit so I'll give it a go. I've killed a mess of does over water early and have only killed two bucks. One in velvet and one in October. Our season opens September first and its super hot and humid the first part of the season so you can always count on deer drifting in at any time. Most of my cams are set over water early and I get some great buck pictures over them in shooting light. I think it depends on proximately to bedding whether or not they are going to make an appearance.
