Bucks that dont rut ?

Unread postby oldrank » Mon Jun 06, 2016 1:13 pm

A few times last year during what should have been the peak of our Michigan chasing and rutting phase I seen bucks that showed no signs of rutting. The buck I killed Nov 15th had no staining on his tarsels. His neck was not swollen. I seen him a few days before with another buck moving through n he showed no signs of rut. During the same time I observed other bucks in full rut phase. Stinking n swollen, nose to ground, grunting roaring n chasing. Why were some in and others not giving a care in the world? Can a hot doe induce a buck to come into rut? Can he turn it off and on? Will some bucks just not participate? I always heard the length of day light triggered the rut. Would the presence of dominate bucks supress rutting in 1.5 n 2.5 yr old deer? Does the pecking order have anything to do with it? What do you guys think?

Gender confused? Maybe he felt like he was really a doe since he was a young fawn. According to PETA it's possible lol

An older buck will suppress a young buck chemically making his testosterone levels low. Maybe just personality also or he's gay. LOL

How active bucks are in the rut goes in a bell curve, the one you shot was just way on one end. In the middle you have average rutting activity and on the other end are the bucks who literally run themselves to death. For whatever reason his homone levels weren't up. Guess it didn't help him to live longer though!

Perhaps we can mix some Cialis into our late summer mineral sites for these bucks? Seriously, some bucks just have differently personalities but I believe most bucks with hardened horns and dropped testicles will mate with does given the chance..... some just might not take as many chances while doing so?

Yea I suspect it has more to do with dominance level than ability or anything like that. If a buck has the proper equipment, he can mate, but if he is a scare-dy cat and just terrified of getting his but kicked, that may suppress any rutting urge. Most bucks are somewhere in the middle.

If your seeing bucks during daylight hrs during the rut, something has them on their. It may not seem like it but; bucks make the rut, the rut doesn't make the bucks.
You can fool some of the bucks, all of the time, and fool all of the bucks, some of the time, however you certainly can't fool all of the bucks, all of the time.

I agree. Different animals have different personalities and dispositions. I also think that where the buck is in the pecks order matters as well.

Everyone gets a headache once in I awhile.

At least your buck wouldn't have to choose to with the bucks or does to make him comfortable anymore.
