Delaware close to Legalizing Sunday hunting

Unread postby Wlog » Sat Jun 04, 2016 1:16 pm

This would be huge for me. Delaware is one of the last five states that doesn't allow Sunday hunting. I live in MD but more than half my hunts take place in DE.

They are only going to open it up to 5 weekends so don't get too excited. And I heard its only on private land. I could fill you in on the nonsense that has been going on with it. Huge opposition from the Delaware Equine Council. Plus State Forest property won't be open for Sundays. Not sure about the WMA's but The decision was made about forest land before they even asked for input from the managers. I was told not asked If you get my drift. Pretty pissed about the whole thing to be honest for so many reasons. Horse back riders don't pay for licensing or user fees and especially don't pay excise tax which is used to purchase and improve land through Pittman Robertson Act funds. I could go off about that particular user group in a colorful way I think I'd get kicked off the site. Not to mention the fact the state has been crying about the drop in license sales and lack of new hunter recruitment. It basically leaves the working man 1 day to hunt a week. And screw bowhunters by the way. It sure would be nice to get that extra day and maybe take your kid out on your day off. You want to screw up something that makes perfect sense let the politicians decide.

That's good to hear. When I first started hunting back in the late 80s we had no Sunday hunting. They changed it shortly there after. I remember how much of a let down it was.

Same here but we had no Sunday firearm hunting. You could bowhunt. I remember one year Nov 15 fell on a Sunday and I hunted with my bow. They changed it 10-15 years ago to allow firearms on Sunday. At the time there was only 3 counties in the state that had some kind of Sunday no hunting

Good news, not sure how you guys handle living in these no hunting on Sunday states. It would cut my time in the woods almost in half if I couldn't get out on the weekends.

MD has some Sunday hunting but it's still not allowed on public. I try to scout on some Sunday's every year. I'll go check out spots I don't plan on hunting and try to get knowledge for the future. That way I can see exactly what's going on during that time frame. Sometimes it works out and I hunt it ASAP. Sometimes I figure out its not worth another trip. Either way atleast I'm being productive on scouting when I can't hunt.

The term "weekend warriors" doesn't really even fit those states. Can't believe that is still up for debate. I can't imagine being restricted like that on the weekends. I feel for you guys that have to deal with this. Sunday is my favorite day to hunt because everybody else is home watching football.

Not allowing hunting on Sunday is idiotic. I hope the change the laws.

The horse lobby is the achilles hill to Sunday hunting in both MD and DE. Many of the Sunday hunting bills in MD are promulgated by the local governments and deal with private land in a specific county only; yet the horse lobby brings the opposition numbers and money (campaign contributions) to continuously reject these proposals.

FL has the same horse lobby. Horse people, birders, hikers, mtn bikers, etc. all show up to the meetings in numbers, hunters may have 1 guy show up...

Y-all should see the hype the proposed bear season is generating - it is like 1,000 to 1 antis vs hunters. Everyone wants to save Yogi & Boo-boo. Wish they put that kind of energy into educating the poor, etc.
