What are the benefits to hunting your state?

Unread postby mainebowhunter » Tue May 31, 2016 4:18 am

After all of the big buck state stuff...what are the BENEFITS to hunting your state? Reading all about other peoples state, realize, even with the lack of deer numbers, my state has a lot of benefits. Here are two of the biggest benefits.

1. Access is a huge benefit with my state. There are SO many areas open to hunting. Landowners readily give access, especially if you are a bowhunter. I am almost 100% successful getting permission with just knocking on doors. Guys who turkey hunt will put miles and miles on their trucks and look for turkeys. Its totally open to hunting if its not posted. If you are 50 miles from your house and you see a tom strutting in someones field, game on. No posted signs? Game on. Not many places in the country can you do that. Same thing with deer. You see a buck 100 yds in a field, step off the road 15 ft, its LEGAL to shoot.

2. Hunting Pressure. Its very low in the areas I hunt. You can figure, most times, I have areas all to myself during October. Rarely ever see another bowhunter in the woods. Any pressure happens in the urban zones. But still, compared to other states, its fairly low. Gun season, the pressure is quite a bit higher. But for the most part, early season, your good.

It's warm during hunting season so it's still relatively comfortable to go fishing!!!!!

Actually LA & MS have good numbers of deer, so both have the potential to produce big deer. We have ample hunting opportunity with a 4 months long season, & plenty of tags to fill 3 bucks & 4 does. Ok so the long season & liberal tags does offer great opportunity, but on the other hands it's one of the limiting factors to the state producing mature bucks.

Both states have a good amount of public land & bow hunting pressure is fairly low on this land. With the lengthy gun seasons in the South & those seasons being during the rut not much early or late season bow hunting pressure.

The temps rarely get below 30 around here so there is zero winter affect on the deer herd. They have food year around & it's easily accessible.

Lots of deer if you like to fill the freezer. Plenty of 3 year old bucks if your willing to work to find them. 2 buck tags long gun seasons but that depends on what side fence your on whether you like it or not

2 deer/day July-Mar if you are willing to travel one end to the other.

Biggest benefit of MN is long seasons. 3.5 month archery season. 9 day gun and 16 day muzzleloader. I do actually view them as TOO long regarding the effects on buck quality, but for the hunter a long season gives you ample time to punch your tag which is nice.

WI there is a lot of quality public land opportunities in certain parts of the state. And there's also the possibility of finding a true giant.

I love my state! However, I'm not trying to convince any beasts that it's any good. Matter of fact it's terrible here! Haha

I would have to say the #1 thing for PA is the amount of public land. There is more public land around me than I could ever hunt. Second would have to be quantity of deer.

You could pretty much hunt the rut that while time as well. If you like other species, we've got lots of those, like gators. If you are just looking for meat, you could shoot a deer or hog in many places. The deer here are much easier to drag. You don't have have to walk uphill.
