I have a close friend who lives between Bozeman and Havre, Montana. I have an open invitation to come up and hunt whitetails up there. I'm seriously thinking about doing it next year. Has anyone ever hunted these zones before? I'd be interested to hear opinions, advice, and facts. Whatever you have, I'll take it as I'll be going into this blind. Thanks in advance.

Ask Bill Jurden (Jordan) - LOL.
Used to be fabulous, I don't think it would be a bad experience.
I'd jump on it!

When I lived in Montana I heard alot about the area. Never hunted it though!
I hear it's got a ton more outfitters now. So it's getting harder to get on land for no fee. But if your buddy has some land already locked up it should be a fun hunt. They had a big EHD kill a few years back. Haven't heard if it hit again. If not they should have recovered by now.
Check with fish and game.

I hunted the Milk river area about 25 years ago... It was fun, but a lot different than the Midwest. Lots of open terrain, and sitting back glassing. Could of shot a 130ish buck but didn't. Came home empty. I was hunting a very large private ranch.

Bozeman is 300 miles from the Milk River. Havre is on the west end of the Milk River area so there must be some mistake about what you are saying. While the Milk River area has been hit with disease quite a bit over the last decade, it is recovering. Southwest Montana did not get hit as hard. The population is not high around Bozeman, but if you can find the right spot, you will see some nice bucks. It's all about finding the irrigated cropland, mostly alfalfa and most of it is northwest of Bozeman. I would definitely not go out there blind. Make sure you have a place to hunt that has deer on it, or you might be just going for a long drive to see the mountains.

Ok thanks. I wouldn't be contemplating it if i hadn't seen some pics of the deer he has on his property as well as other areas he has permission to hunt.

Maybe you didn't understand what I was saying. You said he is between Bozeman, which is in the southern part of the state, and Havre, which is nearly 300 miles to the north. Those are totally different areas with a different answer to your question depending on which one you are asking about.

I think the key is in VA5326's title. He posted the units to be hunted are 600 & 690. Definetly not around Bozeman. But up in the Milk River drainage.
