Vegetation and scent..

Can vegetation act as a scent barrier? For example, if a buck is downwind of you and there is thick vegetation between you and the buck, can the vegetation act as a scent barrier?

Probably not. That buck will be able to tell the difference in what he's smelling. From what I've read, deer will decipher/identify all different kinds of scents that enter their noses. If the air stream enters his nostrils he will smell you. The reaction to your scent might vary given his age and maybe time of year but he will smell you. Playing the wind/air currents is really the only way to keep deer from smelling you.

My buddy has a a theory well he says it's a fact I haven't looked up anything to back it up. But he says scent has to be transferred. Now ur clothes,leaves trees, brush whatever acts as a filter to catch scent molecules floating through the air not all though. Now until ur clothes are soaked the filter will catch most of ur scent once wet that goes out the window. So to answer ur question by what he claims yes an no.

I would take every precaution with scent. Play wind thermals an wash ur stuff why leave anything to chance u possibly can control.

I think depending on the lay of the land and what the vegetation is it can affect thermals. But I do not believe it will absorb the scent.

Id say now. However be atune to things like golden rod as theyre strong scent. Maybe the one and only time I would consider using it as a cover scent but know anything strong scented like that also releases when you step on it and that's not a good thing.

The practical take away I get is scent won't carry as far when there is more vegetation vs less.

Is vegetation a scent barrier: no. But it can definitely redirect the wind currents. Lots of discussion on this forum about how wind currents behave in relation to vegetation.
