Hunting a floating bog

Unread postby kripp53 » Thu Mar 03, 2016 4:42 am

Do you think it would be worth while to scout a floating bog? It is a decent size bog (around 400 acres), the only access is by boat. I have duck hunted it quite a few times in the past but have never deer hunted. Not sure if bucks would like to bed on a floating bog? Near the center of the bog there are some tamarack's and other smaller trees and large shrubs, so it must be more solid near the center, however getting there could be a real pain. Should I check it out?

See any deer trails in the aerial view heading out towards the tamaracks? If so, yes definitely worth scouting.

Dragging a big deer out of that mess is about the most difficult thing you will ever do.

Worth a shot. Floating bogs personally scare the crap out of me. I fell through once and never hit bottom. Took a long time to get out. I was very close to hypothermia.

The good news is a lot of guys don't like floating bogs. No pressure means a potential safe haven for a big buck. Good luck!

Yeah, I've duck hunted this bog a fair amount and have fallen through and swamped my canoe on occasion. I still think I'm gonna give it a shot and scout it out, but looks like I will have to wait until the ice melts, don't want to go trusting ice on a floating bog. Thanks for the reply's everyone.

Same here. I was walking to a marsh transition and about 20 yards before the timber ended I stepped on what I thought was solid ground and sunk to my knee without hitting bottom. Pretty eerie feeling. The entire marsh had this around its perimeter. I could only get through by sticking to the deer trails passing through it.
