Budget Road Trips

Unread postby cedarsavage » Mon Feb 22, 2016 7:29 am

When you guys go on hunting road trips what do you do about lodging? I'm planning a couple road trips this season and plan on using my teepee tent and wood stove for one, but the other public area doesn't allow camping and there's no campgrounds close by. I'm trying to stay low budget so I'd rather not get a motel. Anybody ever sleep in their car on these trips? Do you ever get harassed by the law for sleeping in a no camping area? I know eberhart does it but it seems like a good way to get harassed by the law especially with out of state plates.

Find a wall mart parking lot. That's what im planning. They allow it I heard. Bassboy had a list of places to sleep in your truck in another thread. Wall mart you have food and bathrooms also. I think it would be good for 2-3 day trips. Anymore than that I would find a cabin or motel.

How many guys are going? If there is 4-5 it might be worth renting a house or cabin.I do this with a group of friends and it is cheaper than a hotel

I like the Walmart idea. As far as guys maybe one other guy if he goes I'll have someone to split lodging with. Idk if he'll wanna pay for a motel and probably not want to sleep in his truck, but idk. I guess when I go scout the area next month I'll get a better idea of what's in the area

I have slept in the back of my truck with a mattress and a cap. I am slept in my double bull blind, used that as a tent. Some trucks have a back seat big enough where you can sleep in the back seat. Never tried sleeping in the wally world parking lot.

I know there are a lot of places in the country where mom and pop motels are really cheap. Some of these places used to be $40 a night split 2 ways. The price has since gone up. You cannot beat a nice warm bed and hot shower at the end of the night!!

If you plan on using Walmart check with them or the local police first to make sure it's OK. Walmarts policy is to allow boondocking, but some cities have passed ordinances against it. If I remember right this has been happening due to pressure from campgrounds and hotels.

I know I did it flyfishing. But it was at a campground. Never done it at a place that does not allow it. It is comfortable and easy.

I just bought a shell for my f150 so I have the option to sleep in. My hunting gear will be more secure as well.
