Has anyone had luck hunting in active snow storms? We're bracing for 12-24" here in the mid-atlantic, and I'm yet to fill a tag this year. Being a native to the midwest, I very much prefer hunting with snow on the ground, but I can't recall ever having success during a storm.
For what it's worth, I've embraced mobile hunting over the last couple of seasons, and I have access to walkable hill-country type areas from my house. Not expecting to get stuck necessarily, but deep snow can quickly lead to exhaustion when you're trudging around in the woods... Learned that the hard way last winter!

Try to get out before the storm hits. I would bet once it does the deer will probably stick to thermal cover to ride out the storm. After it is over try again.

I killed a heck of a buck still hunting during a 10 inch blizzard. Had to almost step on him but it all worked out.

I love snow storm hunting.
Hit the hemlocks and thick stuff.
Quiet is on your side so walk with the wind to your face!

Can't beat a snow storm for still hunting.

I'm heading out midday for an evening hunt and expecting good movement. Snow isn't supposed to get going in my area of the Delmarva until around 5PM.

Re: Hunting in heavy snow?
GET OUT THERE! That's my opinion. The worse the weather, the better the deer hunting - provided you know how deer react to bad weather like that. The more concentrated the deer get and the easier it is to get close to them. During the actual storm I would recommend still hunting more so than standing in one spot unless you know a good sheltered area you can set up and cover.
Hunting before the storm will be great - deer will be pounding food in the hours leading up to it. Hunting in the storm will be great - seek those sheltered areas. Hunting after the storm will be great - deer piling out of those sheltered areas back toward food. I love a deer season blizzard. I'm jealous

Snow rolled in here earlier than expected - about 2PM. Evening movement was nil for me.

Re: Hunting in heavy snow?
I got stuck at work until nearly 5pm, then had to pick up my car from the shop. As much as I'd like to be out there, I'm not equipped (snowshoes, etc.) here in MD.
On another note, my new-used hunting "truck" -- a 2008 Subaru Forester -- has definitely shown its utility in this weather. Compared to my wife's 2wd RAV4, the thing is unstoppable :)
