Senate panel backs bill to drop wolf protections in 4 states

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) — A Senate committee has approved a Republican amendment to strip federal protection from gray wolves in three Great Lakes states and Wyoming. The measure also prohibits courts from intervening in those states on behalf of the embattled predator.

Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming sponsored the amendment to delist the gray wolf in Wyoming, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. The Senate Environment Committee approved the bill and it now goes to the full Senate.

Barrasso says the amendment recognizes that the four states have workable plans to protect wolves without federal intervention. He says it's time to "recognize the science and focus our scarce taxpayer resources on truly imperiled species."

Wolves are well-established in the western Great Lakes and Northern Rockies after facing near-extermination in the last century.

To me it's laughable. Many of people that live in wolf country are down to earth common sense folk. They take matters into their own hands and how can you blame them. I have a friend in tomahawk that has wolves within 100 yrds of his house. He has 2 kids and a dog. I don't blame him for taking matters into his own hands. How could anyone?

About time. But I think they should only allow trapping of the wolf.

I think without a wolf hunt it will be hard if not impossible for the up herd to bounce back

Good. I live in wolf country in n mn. In mn you had to draw a tag to hunt or trap. Wolves are super intelligent, most that received a tag never harvested a wolf. They have huge home rAnges. Wolves can devastate a deer herd during a winter with a lot of snow. Cattle farmers see the most issues in the spring. If a wolf gets into a turkey farm/ pen they go crazy. They can kill most of the turkeys and not eat what they kill. Their kill instinct goes crazy with turkeys that can't get away. I live on the edge of big woods and prairie and we rarely see a wolf out in they pairie but find their tracks and kills on occasion. Federal trappers still trap "problem" wolves. Sport hunting will not eliminate wolves. Look at ontario, you can harvest wolves and their population is increasing every year.

In my 30 years of hunting up here, I can only think of 5 or 6 times I have seen a wolf while deer hunting. No, i didnt practice the three s's Most sightings occur when they cross in the front of vehicle headlights.

Cool. We will see if it makes it into an actual law now.

I agree hunting will have little impact on wolf populations. Trapping is the most effective way of managing numbers - allowing hunting is fine, it just won't have a big effect.

There is an awful lot of talk about the three S's considering the third S stands for Shut Up....
