My 2015 Season and Buck Pics
Ive been delaying long enough so here goes...
The 2014 season ended for me here in S Mich, with 2 surviving 2.5 yr olds at least. In reality its VERY high hunter density here in rural mixed AG land, but thankfully there are a few thickets that provide security for a few to survive. Most properties are 5-10 acres, and I hunt my 10 and lease a small 20 ish or smaller parcel behind me to keep it vacant. Having 2 survivors of 2 and 3 yr old might not seem like much, but most MI guys know the struggle is real...I was tagged out last year too so I was happy to watch them live.
So this year I had these 2 big survivors, and a couple other mature bucks that showed for a very short time. This wasnt one of those bucks, but I shot this first one at nearly last light on 10/24, thought he was a different bigger buck, but I was happy. Shot him at about 25 yards after sparring with a smaller buck. He ran 60 and dropped. The smaller buck went over and roughed him up once he was down. That was a first for me to see. I believe he's a 2.5 yr old.
This next buck I shot on 11/4 at close to last light also, from the same stand. Its a good stand on the correct wind, with pretty good access. He came out of nowhere at last light and I shot him at about 8 yards. He ran 30 and stopped, then dropped. I photobombed this area this year, and I dont know this buck. I thought I did, but he's the same genetics Id guess, but I think he's a 3 yr old, rather than the 4 yr old that had the same shape but bigger.
Im happy to have 2 bucks early again, but still wanted to hunt. I took a few friends to hunt public, since we had a few doe tags and he had 2 buck tags. I usually scouted and/or pushed for him to learn new areas on public, some were fun and VERY promising for next year. I shot a doe on private later on also, there were just too many of them so I decided to take one.
I have some good surviving bucks from this year so Im very hopeful for next season. I plant lots of food to keep them between my food and the thick security, and nothing else. Its a great late season draw and I work hard to do it, but Im usually tagged out by then. It mainly keeps them alive...I didnt hunt the plots all season. Its private land but Ive made my 10 acres about as good as I know how.
I learned its real tough to identify specific bucks in low light, with a few second window. Plus I love shooting bucks!!! Im happy with 2 clean kills, with no bad hits or long tracks. Been there, done that like most have. Cant wait to get out scouting, next year more public!
