2015 WI gun season

Unread postby Peeps22 » Mon Jan 18, 2016 7:28 am

2015 WI gun season:

Ive never really been a big fan of gun season but after not bowhunting much because of shooting my buck so early with the bow i actually was itching to fill that tag. I was going to go to a public marsh but decided to sit an overlooked/pain in the a$$ spot on my families lease that is 220 acres but 14 people hunt it so its pressured!... I found a couple beds in there a couple years ago but it just never produced but i only hunted it early season.I finally put the pieces together and figured out this a bed that bucks will bed in once theres pressure out there. Heres the setup: North is towards the top of the picture. I knew if i had any chance of this working i needed to get setup EARLY in the morning. So i arrived at 1:45 that morning and got setup around 2:30. Its wet in there and i planned on wearing hip waders in and then changing into my other boots once i was all setup but i ended up swamping my waders and was left all wet  around opener it started to snow too. I had to make sure to stay East of the buck bed because of the North wind. Around 10 i was starting to get pretty cold because i was wet and the wind was picking up. I told myself to stick it out till at least 10:30 because thats when some of the other guys will be coming out. At 10:20 i heard a couple fourwheelers and thought ok here they come, they got to where the orange circle is and then stopped and turned there fourwheelers off. Where they stopped is up on a decent sized hill and you can see quite a ways so sometimes some of the guys like to just go up there and check if they can see any deer moving. Not 20 seconds after they shut them off, this buck got up and was getting the heck out of there. He could hear them and also had the wind rolling off that hill directly to his bed... smart deer... I shot him at 80 yds and he ran about 30 into some thick brush.

Orange circle-where alot of the other guys park or they follow the trail you see that runs through the circle.
Yellow circle and yellow line-where i parked and my access wrought
Green- where i setup my LW
Red-Buck Bed
Blue-the way the buck left his bed.

Heres my view-Buck bed is just behind that tree circled in red

It was a fun wet drag, but it was one of my most memorable hunts due to the snowy conditions and how my plan came together.

I figured id copy this from my buck contest entry. Maybe it can help some guys out or just another example of a beast style setup.

Not going to lie, typing that up yesterday gave me a HUGE itch to get back at it. Only 8 more months to go...

That's a wide buck - very nice. I liked your story, felt like I could relate a lot to your scenario through various adventures over the years. Well done.
