dominant buck beds.

Unread postby Bayshorebuck8 » Mon Jan 18, 2016 5:09 am

Just wanted to hear the beast input on dominant buck beds. Correct me if im wrong but arnt big buck beds used only by one most dominant buck in the area or will other big bucks try and stay in his bed too? Will subordinate bucks try to sneak into the prime bedding as well?

I have saw a smaller buck go into bed, then a larger buck come in and the smaller buck come out the other side, then a mature buck come in and the larger buck go out the other side.

Go in lay down, then 20-30 mins later another buck comes and pushes him out, and so forth. The mature bucks take the best bedding. All bucks big and small will bed in the same locations, but mature bucks or older bucks push out the younger bucks. Usually I see the smaller buck bed in a a satellite bed not far. As in a cluster of beds in a core area. Not always but I have seen this.

I've seen 4 smaller bucks bed just outside of a bedding area while the dominant buck was in a bedding area with a doe. He was fighting them outta there all morning. A hunt ill never forget

I have seen does use 'primary' or 'dominant' beds as well as little bucks. I know dan has related the same thing in the past. I believe in most areas, especially public, there are simply more good beds than there are good bucks. Most time when I see inferior deer use these beds is when conditions are not optimal for the deer, meaning the dominant buck is somewhere that is better suited for that wind or time of year...

I have seen a dozen different bucks use one bed in a season... And as mentioned, even the occasional doe. Dominant buck comes in, who ever was there 1st simply gets up and beds satellite.

Seems like a good way to gauge the deer on a certain property by overlooking these spots, if you can't spotlight or run trail cameras
