It took 3 years to get a tag. (Zone 4) It was DIY hunt on private land, I killed him out of a 7 to 10 acre woodlot that had a creek running that made a sharp u and funnled everthing to the top side.It was surrounded by cut corn. Not my idea of prime location but the whole area is like that. Sat the fist moring had does come thru. Skipped evening hunt to unpack and get settled for I had 12 days to get it done. Looked at a big chunk of public land as a back up plan. Next moring 2 hours before light took my hand climber to a tree that looked bigger then the one I was in the first morning. I had scouted this place in the summer and thought it had more climber trees. Wrong anyway this tree had more limbs than I had planned I cut them on my way up and got to some real big ones nad decided I was good about 15 feet. Got settled at first light seen two does out in the corn. At 8:30 am heard grunting to my right looked over and saw a does head, then saw the buck he snort weezed at something and began to nuge the does. I guessed him to be in the 140's. I still had not picked up my bow yet. I thought I am in Iowa have 2 weeks to hunt, I have never killed a buck that big WTF do I do. They get closer and are going to get funneld to the top by the creek right to me. I stand up and think I am going to let this deer walk off, I then came to my senses and said he's got mass and a body like a horse I am killing him. The does come by see me draw he stops looks up at me and I let him have it. Hit was back I watched him go 70 yards and bed down, he then gets up and walks slowly hunched over like a liver hit. Wait six hours come back with a buddy I met who is from the area. We find him 200 yards away. He was bigger then I though. Gross is 155 with 40 iches of mass, left side is 10 inches smaller than the right. It was a mile wheel out on the cart thru cut corn fields. My best buck.
