This time of year the cedar swamps are usually pretty good. I've never tried it but old timers have told me they used to cut a cedar down and deer will eat on it

Go where none other dare to go, and there you'll find success.

Re: Native food sources for UP and Wisconsin??
The study above is excellent (although old) and really gives insight as to the variety of native browse species consumed by whitetail during the winter. I would temper its results with differences in specific locations, in the original question it referenced the U.P.
The winter feeding studies of Verme and Ozoga in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and the Cusino Research Station are very specific to that region. For example, thermal protection is critical to survival and the browse species listed in the other study are somewhat irrelevant when the snows are deep and the cold reallys sets in.
To briefly summarize what I am getting at, thermal protection and yarding areas will dictate where the deer are in the winter of the U.P. The location of those yarding areas will dictate what the deer will eat and is typically very different from the "feeding sites" referenced above. The rumen content in the above study actually depicts a better representation from that study of what the U.P. deer consume in the winter.
Verme and Ozoga also verified that white cedar, in exclusion to all other types of woody browse, is capable of carrying a whitetail through the winter if the deer are not overly stressed at the beginning of the wintering period.
Ozoga has writtent books and the Cusino studies can be searched online that were conducted by both he and Verme.

You could also check with local biologist, perhaps the Forest Service has one there also? Does any of the major universities have biology programs (master or above)? If so, you might contact them and see if any students or fellowships that have conducted peer reviewed journal studies.

I've found info on this on some of the county sites. Sometimes under forestry. Others under recreation or hunting and recreation.
I'm pretty sure the Michigan DNR site has excellent info on this as well. It's just been awhile since I was on there! Their interactive maps are probably the best in the country as far as DNR sites go.

Ozoga and Verme spent most of their careers as local biologists and were employed by Michigan's DNR. There are no biologists anywhere with more extensive knowledge of native food sources in northern Wisconsin and northern Michigan. They wrote the book...

You got any links to their studies Bridge. Or how to find them. At least something that isn't a long drawn out scientific paper. Mainly more like a list!
I'm being lazy. I'm sure googling it would work but I'm afraid the list will be endless with all they did. You know google just lumps stuff together alot of the time.

Re: Native food sources for UP and Wisconsin??
My books with their studies and research, along with many other books / most of my hunting and fishing pictures, were torched in a giant bonfire by one of my ex-wives. When I get some time I will see what I can come up with.
